A Little Bit About Me...

Being in college for four years exposed me to social environments that I normally wouldn't have been able to encounter on a day to day basis. Whether I was learning on my own, working with or helping fellow classmates, or even just observing how the professors worked with us, I was always learing new concepts or methods of how to interact with a wide variety of characteristics in a diverse group of people. And due to the difficulty of my major, I feel that by being able to communicate well with others in this area I could handle various other scenarios as well. I love every aspect of music. I am a self taught guitarist as were Roy Clark and BB King. I learned on an old wooden guitar my dad found. I have played since I was nine. I would watch the neighbor boys play because they had lessons and I didn't. My experience includes playing contemporary Christian music with my church praise band. I played for the United H.S. production of "Grease". I also worked with the Salem H.S. Jazz Band and mentored students for a Musical Production. I am currently playing in the band, Uptown Saturday Night. We play music from the 60's through the 70's and are taking my area by storm. We play Eagles and American Legion Clubs as well as outdoor concerts and the Salem Hot Rod Super Nats to name a few.

I believe that comparing complex concepts to everyday, personal objects and situations is the most effective way to learn. Therefore, I am big on metaphors. Algebraic concepts and formulas can often be, I have found, analogous to much simpler ideas or images. Once the abstract is related to the mundane, we can break down the barrier to understanding that can be an automatic or habitual construction for many people. I am also an advocate of learning by example; I will walk through a problem or two, step by step, until the process becomes obvious. From there, equations can become identifiable patterns that essentially require you to simply "fill in the blanks".
