More About This Tutor...

I am a 2012 graduate of Washington University in St. Louis, graduating Summa Cum Laude with a B.S. in Chemistry and concentration in Biochemistry. I have worked as a TA for the sophomore Principles of Biology (II) course as well as the Organic Chemistry Laboratory Course. I have been a tutor & academic mentor for Organic Chemistry since the summer of 2010. Additionally, I was an MCAT tutor & problem solving group leader for my University's MCAT course during the 2011-2012 year. I scored a 37R on the MCAT (PS - 14, BS - 12, V - 11) and a 2260 on the SAT ( Math 770, Verbal 730, Writing 760). I initially started tutoring because of my love for the subjects, and as I worked I understood that one has to be able to cater to different approaches to understanding various topics.

A Little Bit About Me...

The large workload of my college education has given me the skills necessary to multi-task and quickly learn and deliver results demanded in the current marketplace. I feel confident that I could share this skill set with students so that they too can achieve their dreams. I am very patient and will work with any student at any level. I think that practical examples and analogies are imperative for learning higher theoretical concepts. I believe that any student, with the will to succeed, can achieve any dream. It is my desire and hope to take part in at least a small part of a student's success in achieving his or her dream.

Initially, I found that students would have the "oh my god" look on their face when trying to solve a problem. Many of these students benefitted greatly from my ability to break a complex problem into manageable steps they could follow. In the past, I would ask each student what gave them the most problem about algebra. Based upon their responses, we worked together with a "team approach" to solve a problem. I have a great amount of patience to work with students.
As a graduate of both Purdue University and the University of Kansas, I place a premium of education in my own life. In my view, education is never wasted and helps people to understand various facets of the world we live. As an undergraduate at Purdue, I tutored other undergraduates with college algebra during my last year. I found these students benefitted greatly from my tutoring. My teaching style is prescriptive, student based. I teach based on how the particular student can grasp and understand what is being taught because students have their own methods and mental tools to open themselves to what is being taught, so that they learn. I, the teacher, learn from the student how he/she understands what is being taught and fit the subject into a student's frame for understanding.
