In my experience, most students under perform in science and math due to the an inability to relate theses subjects to practical real life examples. Connecting chemistry and physics principles with analogous real life examples is the key for students to become both interested and proficient in these subjects. Tutoring should be a tool used to complement traditional education. When tutoring there is little help in providing information to the student the same way that the teacher presents it. Tutors may also fall into the trap of simply giving the student the answers. For these reasons I prefer an holistic approach to tutoring. Every student is different and they all have different ways of understanding the material.
