I typically employ the Socratic method: asking questions to discover what the student knows (or thinks he knows) and guiding his thinking toward discovering the knowledge himself. Both my three children and my Scouts have declared that they enjoy my teaching because it engages their interest and because it is frequently humorous (when the subject and the occasions permits). Unfortunately, experiments cannot always be done, so I use lots of illustrations and age-appropriate analogies that are easy to relate to. Many times students are convinced that science is a subject too difficult to conquer, that they must just survive it, but science is all around us.
