A Little Bit About Me...

While attending a small private university in upstate New York, I pursued a degree in Chemistry with a minor in English. I excel in all parts of the scientific discipline, receiving perfect marks in Chemistry, Physics, and Biology. In addition to direct courses in Algebra and Calculus, I used mathematics on a daily basis in the upper level Chemistry courses. Also, I achieved top marks in General Writing, Technical Writing, Public Speaking and Literature courses. I am confident that my grammar and diction are more than adequate. I pursued my degree in Biotechnology with the intent of continuing my education with a PhD in Molecular Microbiology. Instead, I have worked in the pharmaceutical industry for a total of 5 years as an Analytical Chemist. I was a Trained Trainer at Wyeth Pharmaceuticals for 2 years which means I completed a program on how to teach other employees to perform tasks in a method that maximized retention (allowed them to remember the process well). I have solid grammatical skills honed while writing professional reports.
My teaching experience to date has been in a professional setting. I relate best to high school and college students because these levels are what I am used to dealing with. In science and math the learner has to practice much like learning to play a musical instrument. It helps if you can bring real world applications into the classroom so it is meaningful to the students otherwise they feel like they are learning something just for the cause of learning.
While completing my teaching degree I taught for three years with troubled youth. Subjects were regents level and the subject was earth science and algebra or course I as it is called in NY. I have also taught Summer school at the Allen Center in South Kortright which can be a tough crowd to work with. During my undergraduate studies I tutored chemistry and biology. I also taught 8th grade physical science in Prince George Virgina.

A Little Bit About Me...

Personally, it takes me time to process all the information and to make the subject my own by applying the new information to my previous knowledge. That is why I believe in repetition as a learning strategy. If a student do not get a concept, giving personal examples referring to student's interests would help to understand the concept better. I also believe that students learn better when we have entrusting relationships which could be shown with credible actions and words. As a Siena College graduate I developed a very hands on approach to active learning. Through classroom lecture and instruction I've completed the necessary coursework to complete my BS of biology. Due to my strong work ethic I've gained knowledge and skills in the physical sciences, as well as in other subject areas. During my college years I subbed as teacher at a public K-12 school. During that time I taught a variety of grade levels, and worked as a one-on-one aide.
I believe that in order to succeed in teaching and being an educator you must inspire those that you are teaching. A child who is excited to learn, will do much better. I feel a hands on approach is best, guiding the child to personal success.
