Learning through culture and language

Recently graduated, I have taken four years of Spanish. I taught Spanish III and Spanish II last year with classes ranging in size from 31 to 25 as well as having taught French I and French II in the same year. I taught myself a variety of languages mainly Romance languages including French, and Portuguese along with many others still working at fluency.
I teach in a style which combines different tactics and methods in order to engage the students in the subject. In example, when teaching foreign language I make it a point to incorporate the culture of the native people and their customs along with music and art.

From January 2006 through August 2008, I worked part-time as a freshman composition instructor, writing lab tutor, and teaching assistant for the English department at UNT. As an instructor, I taught two classes per long semester and one, intensive summer session. During the fall semesters, I taught Composition I, which introduced students to a variety of writing concepts, such as the personal essay and the visual text. The students wrote five papers, three to five pages in length, with each paper designed around one of the concepts. For those exercises, I emphasized the importance organization, grammar, and syntax rather than content. During the spring semesters, I taught Composition II, which required the students to develop critical reading and thinking skills as a progression toward a final research paper. The students prepared two papers covering assigned works of anthologized ... read more

Educated professional - Alternative tutor

I worked in after school progrmas all through college and generally enjoy helping children study. I am very engaging, patient and relate well to any age child or young adult. I am not a proto-typical, traditional "tutor" in that I never studied education in a pedagogical sense, but I am highly educated and always made high grades in every level of school. I may can help where the traditonal teachers/tutors have been unsuccessful. I have no specialized training related to ADD/ADHD other than I have been diagnosed as such since high school. More About This Tutor...

I am a recent graduate from Indiana University who has a passion for art, history, and film. I spent most of my college career teaching at IU Outdoor Adventures, Indiana University's outdoor recreation program. There, I gained the skills to instruct on rock climbing and backpacking. I believe that the teaching style I learned there pertains to teaching any subject. A teacher should guide the student to the answer, rather than giving it to them in an easy answer. I also worked as a Naturecrafts staff member at Camp Barney Medintz in Cleveland, GA. At CBM, I taught kids ages 8 to 16 outdoor skills and guided backpacking trips. Working there taught me how to best educate all ages in a fun and interactive manner. Whether it be playing a game or taking a walk, learning can be enjoyable.
I believe in guiding a student towards an answer through experience, rather than telling them the ans ... read more

I typically employ the Socratic method: asking questions to discover what the student knows (or thinks he knows) and guiding his thinking toward discovering the knowledge himself. Both my three children and my Scouts have declared that they enjoy my teaching because it engages their interest and because it is frequently humorous (when the subject and the occasions permits). I really enjoy the company and conversation of young adults and find I often learn from them as they are learning from me. I also believe that the brain is like a muscle: the more it is exercised the stronger it gets.
My wife and I home-schooled our three children from 1993 until 2004. In addition, I was active in Scouts from 1994 until 2007 as Assistant Scoutmaster, Scoutmaster and Merit Badge Counselor. These positions are supervisory in nature and involve both formal and informal teaching, mentoring and ... read more

My techniques will be customized to the subject and student population. One of the techniques: I will use exercises and team involvement as additional tools for re-enforcement and opportunity of exchange, so that team spirit and creative opportunities can be encouraged and explored. Students will notice how genuine my interest in education is, as I am an avid learner myself. I will also create an environment of comfort, exchanges, and suggestions. A Little Bit About Me...

I have been tutoring since 2006 and have covered a broad range of subjects during my time. My tutoring experience ranges from helping elementary students prepare for private school entrance exams to tutoring college students in math, english, economics, and history and everything in between. I have worked with students teaching them anything from algebra to calculus. I enjoy tutoring math the most but am very comfortable helping students write papers, or providing them critiques of their compositions. I wrote many papers during my time in college as a philosophy major and can help with fundamentals of writing as well as self-editing techniques.
My teaching style is to do whatever works, and to get it done. I pride myself on working with my students on their level and being able to understand their personal barrier to grasping the material. I am very conscious of not imposing ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is one in which I strive to engage students in the subject by both instructing and challenging them to think on their own. I also strive to accomplish this goal in such a manner that the student experiences the fun that is a part of learning, but one that also emphasizes the importance of the learning process as well. In all of my tutoring and teaching experiences, I communicate how critical good study habits are: self-discipline; finding a quiet place to study; punctuality; attention to detail; following the rules; etc.
As a person who holds both a BA and MA in English, each with concentrations in writing (creative and technical, respectively), I am qualified to, and have for several years, tutored English language studies skills, including composition, grammar, punctuation, and reading comprehesion, to students from the third grade through college.
