A Little Bit About Me...

It has been my experience that each student has his/her individuals needs and that each learns differently. Thus, I make a conscious effort to sit down privately with each of my students so that we can address his/her concerns effectively and put together a constructive plan to improve his/her skill set.
As a tutor with Webster University's student literacy corps, I worked with individuals, pre-K-adult, on reading, literacy, and writing skills. I held this position for two years along with a summer position tutoring Algebra and French with HEC Upward Bound, which service at-risk youth. I found both programs extremely enjoyable and found that all of my students were eager to learn and improve their skill set.

My first teaching experience was as a high school senior where I was given the opportunity to teach a small group of 5th graders as part of the Missouri A+ program. We began with division, quickly moving into linear and nonlinear algebra, before touching on the fundamentals of complex numbers, graph theory and trigonometry, before concluding with a derivation of the quadratic formula and its applications. Most of my teaching experience has come through the various assistantships I had at Wheaton College. These involved a wide range of tasks, from tutoring to leading discussions to conducting extensive research. I fit my teaching style to the student's learning style. I try to follow the model of my physics advisor, who has an excellent ability to figure out how a student learns best, then adapt his teaching and explanations accordingly. Students are often closer to understanding than they realize, and a different presentation can make a huge difference. I work to improve weak areas and capitalize on strengths for each student. I keep things relaxed, but focused; and I make sure to work through the material with my students, moving on when they are ready. As we are working, I also help them with note-taking and study skills.
