As a ski instructor, I've worked with children aged 3 - 12. Parents frequently praised my patience and ability to remain a calm, controlled and enthusiastic teacher. My first tutoring experience actually began when I was a high school senior and tutored ESL students at South High School. Since then I have worked in a summer program tutoring elementary ESL students, gone on to graduate with degrees in English and Environmental Studies, and most recently, worked as an Americorps member at Andersen Elementary and Open in Minneapolis. My primary role at Andersen was tutoring elementary students (mostly 5th grade) in math and reading. I also have some experience in teaching ecology at a couple of environmental learning centers. What is called the "Affective Filter" is what I deal with most: that is the part of each student that is unwilling to try. I am working toward teaching at the university level and have, of course in the process, taught students at the university level in literature and Arabic. But I enjoy tutoring and teaching students at a variety of levels because the different levels require different creativity and different techniques that create an ability to think on one's toes that feeds the classroom energy and enthusiasm.
