I am not a teacher; I am an awakener!

Very skilled in teaching a variety of learning styles across the different areas of the multiple levels of intelligences.
I have taught in the education field since 1999. I am very fortunate to have had the privilege of working with a multitude of learners in a variety of environments. Early in my career I worked with adults that were mentally and physically challenged. I found this very rewarding and decided to pursue a degree in education, which lead me on my journey into the world of Special Education. I began working with children and young adolescents who had a variety of special needs and learning styles; I went on to specialized Autism and Special Education for K-12. After working with young children for many years I decided to branch out to work with young adolescents and adults pursuing their high school equivalency. Working with young adolescents and adults proved to be j ... read more

Experienced and Proactive Educator

Experienced and New York State Certified teacher. I have over 10 years experience teaching students in grades 1-12 and 5 years experience teaching adults. I also have extensive tutoring experience. I have an MA from Marist College as well as a BA from NYU. I have designed and taught SAT prep classes (verbal/writing portion) as well as developing curriculum integrating diverse domains of knowledge to create a broad, deep and flexible learning experience for students.
I believe that competence and confidence are BOTH important in learning. Students bring their own knowledge and learning styles to the process. It is the teachers job not only to adapt instructional style to best support the learner, but also to help the student understand his or her own learning style and needs.

Bringing fun and learning together to achieve success!

Many years of experience teaching, working, and tutoring children of all ages. Every child learns in a different way. I want to be able to find the best way and help children have fun while learning. It is important to establish what learning method works best for a child before teaching can take place. A child will be successful if they are having fun and learning in a style that they feel comfortable with.
Hands on learning, use of technology, books, group learning, creative role play of different ways to solve problems.

My comments on tutoring Government : Taught Government and Politics

I was employed by the Lakeland Central School District as a substitute Teacher Aide and later in a full time capacity. I worked for the OASIS Program and later at the Alternative High School. After completing my Bachelor's Degree at Concordia College, I applied for and was accepted into the New York City Teaching Fellows Program. I taught Special Education at a high needs urban high school in the Bronx. This was a challenging and rewarding experience. Many of my students continued on to post secondary schools. I am currently finishing my Master's degree program at City College of New York, expected graduation is May 2013.
I have a varied style, which is geared to the learning style of my students. I teach world to text, text to text, text to life.

More About This Tutor...

As an attorney I have spent the better part of my career mentoring co-workers and educating clients. As a litigator, I have drafted countless legal documents including pleadings motions and appellate briefs. As a result I have gained substantial insight into the art of persuasive writing.
My colleagues and clients continually tell me that I am the only lawyer who has been able to explain complicated issues in a manner that was easily understandable. I find that the Socratic method (individual discovery) works well with motivated interested clients. I am patient and have a laid back style that permits active participation in the process. While I have no formal teaching experience, my work as a mentor should enable me to to make a substantial difference in the lives of the children I who are seeking assistance in the art of written communication.

More About This Tutor...

2008 Graduate in English from Boston College. My experiences with capable and engaged teachers help me hone my written and verbal skills, the reason I chose to major in English. Throughout high school, I was proficient in not only these skills, but also Mathematics and History, which led me to sample many related classes in college. I have past tutoring experience in Math and English, and my SAT scores were 710 in each of these disciplines. I also spent a lot of time mentoring children in a Learn to Skate program at Bear Mountain.
Understanding the learning habits of an individual is the key to relating to the student and making positive changes in those habits. I'm patient and empathetic, which helps me find methods to tailoring strategies unique to the student. Attempting to conform an individual to one predescribed style is the reason they're left behind in the first place. Ther ... read more

I enjoy tutoring immensely and look forward to beginning again. I like the challenge of engaging and reaching different types of learners. I use my social works skills in tutoring and vice versa. I think these two fields are closely related in the sense that I seek to empower my students as I would my clients.
I have several years of tutoring experience at various settings including urban, suburban, and rural high and middle schools. I have tutored such subjects as French, Spanish, Math, and English. I have also tutored college students in subjects including sociology, psychology, statistics, and others. I have instructed students on various study techniques, writing skills, and note-taking practices. I am currently a licensed social worker with a range of experiences building rapport with young people and collaborating with school staff and officials.

A Little Bit About Me...

I had a wonderful experience attending MSMC.I learned a wide variety of skills and techniques throughout the Psychology teachings as well as about the intriguing study of Psychology itself. There were many opportunities to examine and research philosophies and perform actual research as a team. I had the experience of learning a long side other students, however, I did tutor other fellow classmates at various times throughout my educational career in many venues.
I truly enjoy presenting people with ideas and having them gain the knowledge and capacity to gain the intended results. I have taught and mentored people within my work setting as well. My preference has always been to allow someone to think of ideas after you give them the tools they need; it becomes both productive and rewarding at the same time.

A Little Bit About Me...

Upon my decision to return to college and obtain my BS degree, it was discovered that I possessed an uncanny, natural talent involving all aspects of the studies surrounding English. Reading, comprehension, symbolism, poetry, creative writing, poise, maturitym ,ect. After that placement exam, it was decided that I did not have to take any English courses, or, I would take more advanced courses. I did choose the latter. Throughout the last 10 years, I have helped my husband, brother, all of my children, etc. I have tutored them on how to write a well developed paper on their topic of choice, and have it read showing the expertise of the writer. I possess the same talents when it comes to proper grammar. I also teach Catholisim to the 8th grade once per week for 2 hours. I prepare them for the sacrament of confirmation. That is very challenging.
I do enjoy helping anyone write ... read more

I do not have a lot of experience in the teaching field but I am a natural born teacher. I have been a mentor to many people in my life; friends, co-workers, even family members would say the same. I have several years experience working with children and adults in the education field. The students I have taught at the college level ranged from late teens to early 30s. As I have worked with such a wide range of ages I am familiar with the needs of students in each age group I have taught. I work with the student to understand the areas in which they are not as strong or confident and work with them to develop a method of studying and learning that works best for them. I believe that one of the most beneficial methods of learning material is to relate the material to something the student may be more familiar with or something with which they can relate.

In my experience, the approach that works best with all ages is to form a cooperative bond to make the effort more a “we” project than a “you-must-do-this” one. We set goals to be achieved step-by-step, so that the student learns about the process of studying, rather than simply making the “grade.” In general, I follow the steps, including “preview- view- review,” outlined in my book, How to Do Your Best on Tests. I offer praise and positive reinforcement, rather than criticism or negativity; when errors occur, the effort is praised, and we work to learn from the mistake – and to find alternate approaches that achieve the result. This process can raise grade averages as well as enhance self-esteem and self-confidence.
In addition to teaching and providing learning opportunities for all ages, from preschool through adults (including those with special needs), in a variety of set ... read more

Flexibility is the key to my methodology as I understand that not all of us learn in the same ways and that to achieve the desired result, identifying the students optimal learning style leads to continued learning success. I believe that everyone has the capacity to learn any given task as long as there is interest and proper guidance. I strive to provide that interest and once developed, the guidance to successful learning.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have found in my own experience that removing a students fear of making mistakes reassures them that without making mistakes one cannot expect to truly learn and understand. After establishing this common ground with my students I have seen a dramatic increase in their self-confidence, desire and motivation to succeed and achieve. Conveying knowledge comfortably to students allows for growth and a rewarding experience for the student and for myself as well. Comprehensive learning should inspire a students willingness to do the best they can.
