I am a one-on-one instructor. If chess rules are not known such as piece movement and lack of notation keeping, I will teach you that first. I will gauge your playing level after playing some games with you. From there you will learn tactics, openings, general positional strategy, endgame technique, and etiquette appropriate to your level.
I have taught children and adults chess since 2005. I've done lectures as well as private lessons. I am currently the 1st Board and Captain of the University of Pittsburgh Chess Team. I ran a chess club in Wyncote, Pennsylvania until I left and came to Pittsburgh. I have been playing chess since 1st grade, and I am quite passionate about the game. I also care for my students and improving their performance in tournament and casual play.

What a better way to teach your teen than by a teen?

I graduated high school in late October of 2012. I am not currently in college. I am working twords bettering my future. I enjoy helping others and I find it easy. I used to be tutored and I hated it because the tutors seemed to not care if I got it. I make sure the person or people I am tutoring understand and remember how to do what I am asked to teach them. In high school my teachers used to send me to other classes and tutor kids in the middle of class. I am extremely flexable and can help just about anyone I try to teach. I will not say every because no one is perfect and I'm not going to pretend I am.

A Little Bit About Me...

As an undergraduate at UConn, I pursued a number of fields from computer science to communications and philosophy, giving me a wide range of experience in a multitude of subject areas. In my senior year, I became a substitute teacher for grades 7-12 in all subjects. I am currently a graduate student in criminal justice, writing papers and doing research almost continuously.
As an active member of Mensa International and someone who's consistently done well in number-related fields, I've come to love teaching what I can understand. I perceive the world in a very unique way and I excel at using my perspective to help my students understand what others typically have difficulty imparting to them. I aim to one day be a professor and I love to inspire learning in and out of the classroom.

A Little Bit About Me...

I love finding out how exactly students learn and being able to make learning an enjoyable experience for them. I think that it is not enough to help students learn; they should be taught how to learn. I am a strong believer in learning concepts before applying them to situations. I am a very visual teacher, utilizing props, graphs, drawings and other useful tools to impress the subject matter on students. I also believe in the "see one, do one, teach one" method. By the end of my instruction, students are not only able to complete the problems, but are able to walk through them and "teach" me how to do them. A person will have many teachers in their lifetime, but few of them will be educators.

A Little Bit About Me...

My approach towards and methods of instruction are centered on meeting the diverse needs of different students and thus employing diverse strategies. Not all students learn the same way because their brains are attuned to different cognitive stimuli. An effective instructor will convey the same learning objectives through these different learning channels. Two, the students will find the repetition and predictability of the class either easy and unchallenging, or boring and difficult to understand. Either way, student motivation suffers. Effective instruction centers the students in the learning process by keeping them actively involved in classroom events.
Since graduating from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in 2004, I substituted at various school districts until 2006 and further enhanced my grasp on the fundamentals of effective instruction. I continued to observe othe ... read more

As indicated above my teaching has not been in a formal setting. I practiced on the job by 1) knowing what I am talking about, 2) listening to the person desiring knowledge, 3) allowing that person to come to believe that there is no mystery or magic to it, 4) explaining not just the "how" but the "why" of it and finally, 5) practice-correct-practice.
As a manager and coach I have formally and informally trained employees within my unit and provided same to those interested outside my area. Many have said "you should have been a teacher" over the years but more lucrative pursuits were my focus. I have taken the time to volunteer for Habitat for Humanity to teach a financial literacy class to a prospective homeowner. My interest motivated me to attend the Financial Literacy Commission meeting in DC on May 27th at the US Treasury Builidng and it gave me ideas on how to merge my pet p ... read more
