I believe in identifying where a student lies on the subject he/she is studying before going further. The advantage of one on one tutoring compared to classroom is that the lesson can be based around where the student’s strengths and weaknesses are rather than a blanket method. I also believe that the skills used in English can be best practiced and analyzed through writing rather than worksheets and tests. I use traditional style (I have a background in Latin)and proper English; I accommodate current usage. I favor limiting colloquialisms. One must write clearly and concisely. I do not use a metaphor, simile or other figure of speech that is commonly seen in print. A dead metaphor such as "lend a hand", however, is acceptable. I also try not to use a long word where a short one will do. If it is possible to cut out a word, I do so. I use the active not passive voice in most cases.
