Over the years I have had the opportunity to tutor students of all ages in English, reading, reading comprehension & Spanish. I have also taught Spanish to elementary and high school students and to adults in night classes in our community.I have earned a BA in Spanish which has enabled me to gain a thorough understanding of the Spanish language and culture. Also in earning my Psychology Minor and through my classes in the education department I have become very aware of attitudes and behaviors which have helped me to better understand the psyche of students.

A Little Bit About Me...

I find it rewarding to teach children and adults the necessary skills that allow them to obtain full English literacy. One of the greatest accomplishments in the course of the educational process is the acquisition of full, quality literacy; it is the foundation. Consequently, I prefer a step-by-step, pragmatic method of teaching English language skills: phonics, words, syllables, consonants, verbs, sentences, punctuation, grammar, etc.
As a long-term adjunct instructor, I have successfully cultivated an effective set of best teaching practices relative to the English language and Communications. I make every conscious attempt to relate to my students as individuals and to meet their educational needs. There are many ways to present material, such as discussion, visual effects and hands-on. What I have learned is that many people can learn through more than one way of teaching. My teaching style is a collage of teaching styles. I am well aware that students retain and use information in numerous ways. Sometimes, I facilitate from the side, allowing the students to take hands on control with the information, at other periods, I might lecture on the topic and then question and discuss issues provided from what was just read. One just has to be acquainted with the learners' style and then the subject, lesson plan, and displaying of information can be customized more suitedly, to the student. Any student can learn, they just have to have the information provided to them in a manner where they can retain it and make it useful.

The primary obligation of a tutor is to show the pupil that big, intimidating chunks of academic work, whether they be assignments, units, or even entire classes, can be broken down into logical sequences of more manageable parts. To accomplish that, I focus first on my demeanor. When struggling in school, it is easy to panic, and if the tutor is relaxed, calm, and deliberate, then that catches on and the session can proceed in a level-headed manner. Also, I make sure that the sessions are reliably structured. We look first at the syllabus, then at the assignment at hand, and articulate what exactly needs to be accomplished.
