I believe above all that patience is key in teaching people of all ages. If the teacher's listening and communication skills are focused on the individual(s) being taught, the learner will let the teacher know when they are grasping and/or absorbing new material as well as when they(the student) reach their capacity. I had to decline an offer to pursue a PhD at the University of Cambridge in the UK due to a lack of funds.
