More About This Tutor...

My passion is helping struggling readers become successful. I know how difficult it is for learners who do not like to read. Struggling readers who do not like to read have common characteristics. The most dominate characteristic is that they avoid reading at all cost. They avoid it because they have come to think they are not good at it and cannot do it. Little do they know that everyone can learn to read. To get better at something you have to practice doing it. Reading is no exception. With a little guidance everyone can learn to read. My hope is not only that struggling learners learn to read but learn the joy and love of reading! I am currently a licensed teacher who works with struggling readers. I have a K-12 reading license and a master’s degree in elementary education. My work experience includes helping students in elementary and middle school.

I like to challenge people to think outside of the box. Although I know it is important to know how to take tests and write papers appropriately, I also know that showing skills that go above and beyond, is what makes a student stand out. I will challenge your mind but in a way that will help to see the bigger picture out of the details, and will also help to shape you into a well-rounded, thoughtful individual.
I am currently a Sociology student at Augsburg College. I am also pursuing a minor in Psychology. This year will be my last, so I will graduate in 2014. Also, I have taken several creative writing courses at the Loft Literary center, as well as at my College. I received a 4.0 in my courses. Also, in high school, I was always a level above in all English and composition classes.

Patient. Positive.Encouraging. Keeping it light. My primary aim would be to build the student's self confidence and image. Encouraging enthusiasm for the subject matter,by making it more receptive, would be an additional desired outcome. I would place special emphasize on promoting the need to read, write, and speak well, regardless of the subject. Teaching critical thinking would also be a goal. An instructor can't really teach a student. But the pupil can be given learning support and the tutor can plant the desire to pursue the individual's own education at their own pace, by providing the right guidance.

A Little Bit About Me...

My nine years of teaching and two years of volunteer teaching experience have finely honed my ability to relate to students and help them to understand concepts in a wide variety of subjects. While earning my Master's in Education and certification in both Biology and Religion I sharpened both a wide range of knowledge in a wide variety of science and math topics, as well completing major research projects. I have significant knowledge in the topics of science, math, psychology, music theory, and writing skills (both creative and scientific).
I truly enjoy helping children learn. Years of experience teaching helps me find the area they need help in quickly, and my analytical thinking helps me apply the best practice to work on it. I easily develop a good rapport with my students, yet I have clear and high expectations that helps them to excel. I am firm but kind, and believe t ... read more

My goal is to be a college professor and tutoring is the first stepping stone. Being able to help students reach their full potential is my passion and my goal in life.
English and education have been a passion of mine for my entire life. My undergraduate experience at the University of Minnesota Morris exacerbated this characteristic. While at U of M Morris I lead several study groups as well as copy-edited for the University newspaper. Grammar, nonfiction writing as well as critical analysis of literature are my strongest talents.

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is, for the most part, non-directive. I think it is important to try to have students answer their own questions. When this does not work, I do not just tell the student what goes where or why this doesn't work, I give reasons and have them tell me these same reasons the next time we come across something that doesn't work.
At SCSU, I work as a writing consultant at the Writing Center on campus. With students, I help to make them better writers by helping answer questions, presenting questions, working through the brainstorming and paper-writing process, and helping with formatting. As well, I have helped to coordinate our second satellite location, which entails working with people on their schedules, managing conflicts of schedule, and serving as a head of the second location. I am also fluent in Spanish and feel comfortable tutoring high school and college leve ... read more

My first degree in history and philosophy influenced me in how I approached all other fields of study. I am never satisfied with a superficial knowledge of anything I undertake. My experience with other cultures has been a huge influence in how I approach knowledge and how I approach teaching. I lived in Quebec, Canada for 29 years, learned French and studied in a French university. I also speak German. I am an excellent writer in English. A Little Bit About Me...

I like to teach ESL from the Communicative Competence ideal. Integrating reading writing speaking listening into thematic units. Learning a new language requires hands on experience. If for example we are doing a unit on weather then my students may role play a weather man. Gather vocabulary from a newspaper. Count change as if they were really buying something. Read and write from a reporters perspective, or even travel to a museum with a reoprt and description of things they have seen using adjective and adverbs for color and detail. I also believe reading should be taught at the appropriate reading level for comprehensions sake. If a reader is below the 98% error level, they will not succeed. Frye's reading level test determines the reading level. Vocabulary is very unique in that there are many fun activities to spur children into acquiring a huge vocabulary. Teaching needs to adjust with each student or class, because everyone has their own flavor for learning. I tend to let the student take the lead at first, and then I try to guide them through the areas they're questioning. It's like a car on a road with a new driver: the student is driving all over the road, and I need to gently urge them into the right lane (or the correct answer). I also like to use real world examples when I can from my past experience, and encourage the student to do so as well.
When I first started college, I had no idea what to major in. I started taking creative writing and literature classes though, and found my niche in English. I enjoy writing, reading, proofreading, checking grammar and punctuation, and find myself reviewing billboards and magazines for errors. I've been able to put these skills to actual use as an instructor, tutor, and advisor for coll ... read more
