I graduated magna cum laude from Drury University, a private liberal arts college, in 1987, with a major in fine arts (photography and graphic design emphasis) and minor in communications (four years experience on the college newspaper). I also have 21 years of experience as an editor at weekly and daily newspapers in Missouri, Nebraska and Oklahoma. Working primarily at smaller newspapers, I have an extremely varied background of experiences - from writing "hard" news and features to on-the-job training for new reporters just out of college or new to the profession. I do not have any direct experience teaching or professionally tutoring in English. However, I am very proud of my English skills, and I look for opportunities to help others develop theirs. I entered one year of tutoring experience because I believe that I have equivalent experience through assisting others with their class assignments or professional documents. I have considered the idea of taking additional classes to become certified to teach part-time. I received a 35 on the English section of the ACT, and I have excelled in my English courses. Throughout my college career, I have extended my knowledge in this area. I realize that learning reading and writing skills can be difficult. When I teach young people, I work to push each person patiently but constantly to improve with each lesson. Each person learns a little differently, and I like to learn the student’s strengths and weaknesses and work from there. I support hands-on learning. There is only so much a person can talk about writing. The best way to learn writing is to write. The best way to improve reading comprehension is to read. Reading unlocks vocabulary.
