Individual & Group Tutoring. Project-Based Enrichment

I have extensive experience as a k-12 and adult teacher of all subjects (excepting advanced math and science) and as a teacher of technology to all ages, including technophobes:) I offer specific subject tutoring, as well as project-based enrichment programs tailored to a student's interest. More About This Tutor...

Teaching is an art. It can and does vary for each individual. When I teach, I first attempt to assess what type of learner the child is. What causes the child to become a sponge? My goal is to provide the best understanding of the material possible. I firmly believe that with a if you allow the person to do the work and just simply facillitate them, they will come to realize they more than likely know alot more than they originally thought. This process helps to boost self-esteem which can at times are shown by the grades of the students after our tutoring sessions and even during.

A Little Bit About Me...

I create a learning-centered environment that is a welcoming, comfortable, and encouraging place in which my students feel safe enough to explore and share their thoughts and observations of the world. I consistently communicate my interest in and enthusiasm for the course material by demonstrating the real-world application of the skills we are learning and by illustrating how much I respect and value my students’ thoughts and ideas. I believe the old authoritarian model of classroom teaching, in which the student is a passive receptacle, creates a threatening environment that allows for very little room for growth. I follow a more democratic approach to teaching that is participatory in nature and promotes active learning.
I have over ten years of college teaching experience and have taught a wide range of subjects, including English composition, English as a second language, rem ... read more

The later provided me with dozens of short courses in education. I also completed and retired from a civilian career with the US Army and Navy, starting as an intern, and reaching Senior Executive levels. Very recently I have been tutoring fifth grade and seventh grade students attending Lake Highland in Orlando. Also worked with math students working at Seminole State and Valencia.
Students learn best from doing things. I try not to lecture, but to involve the student in the learning process. I can lecture, but I haven't found it to be as effective as other methods. I very much prefer tutoring to classroom teaching, mostly because I am helping people learn what they want to learn, and so ... read more

Most recently, I worked as a tutor for a private school in the Dominican Republic where I tutored eleventh graders in pre-Calculus.
From my own experiences as a student I have come to the opinion that the most valuable educational accomplishment one can achieve is to “learn how to learn”. This seems to be a state of mind, an epiphany if you will, which hopefully will be realized at some point in the course of an individual’s intellectual development. Such a state of mind is not usually due to the efforts of a particular instructor, nor is it the result of having taken a certain class. R ... read more

I believe in determining the needs of each specific child. Some students need more structure, while others need more freedom and more creative pathways towards learning. I can facilitate both, specilizing in transformative, participatory learning. To see and hear are one thing, but learning by doing is the most successful. My goal in life is to provide opporuntity, motivate, and inspire others as others have done for me.
As an undergrad at UCF, I spent time tutoring fellow classmates in english and math classes. I began teaching a student leadership class and continued that while in graduate school. I spent a year in Japan teaching english through a variety of teaching meathods. Based on empowerment and flexibility, I begin by learning my student’s strengths, weaknesses, learning style and his or her goals. Their strengths are used as a tool of empowerment and their weaknesses establish what challenges exist. Flexible due to the differences in learning, I model my teaching style in accordance with the learning style of my student; this helps to increase the level of the student’s progress and decrease the time frame needed to begin seeing positive results. Through learning the student’s goals, I am able to help them feel empowered every time there is a positive result and have them feel accountable when there is not. I am also able to help them expand on their goals and possibly create new ones.

teaching children to read and read more fluentely is the teaching approach I find necessary to meet academic achievement. I beleive a child's determination to learn to read and learn is directly effected by the approach of the educator that is providing the learning experience. I graduated from UCF with a Bachelors in Communicative Disorders (speech therapy). I love english and science and found this to be a perfect mix. I worked with children with language delays in group settings and also tutored children individually. I am currently in the process of obtaining my teaching certificate in science and working towards my masters degree.
I prefer to work with children who have learning disabilities and/or with a dislike for education. I find that my teaching style is interesting to this particular type of student. I acknowledge the childs dismay in learning and I allow them to help me to adjust the teaching material to a teaching style that best suits the childs learning style. Science and english are subjects that many children don't enjoy. I make it much easier for them to learn the subject and then we expound thier knowledge from there.
