My comments on tutoring English ESOL : Working on a MA in Applied Linguistics with an ESOL concentration

Aside from my degrees, I tutored fellow students (and even professors) in either Spanish or German throughout 2006-2010. I studied abroad in Costa Rica and Germany and lived in Spain for a year teaching English. I have extensive knowledge of both Latin American and Peninsular Spanish and my German is mostly Northern. I began learning Spanish in 2002 and German in 2004.

As a college English professor and high school English teacher with an MA in English, I have had the opportunity to help many young people improve their writing and critical thinking skills. My teaching style is best described as modern Socratic method. Questioning to elicit critical thinking is the essence of education. My teaching style initally involves getting to the know the person, what they are struggling with, why they think they may need a tutor, and anything they have tried in the past and what has and has not worked for them. I like to encorporate all aspects to assist with learning (visual aids, listening, and hands-on/practical). This may involve games, cartoons/movies (if tutoring Spanish), worksheeets. I also feel that goal-setting is important, and I think I would ask the tutee to set some individual/personal goals for themself, (i.e. amount of time studying or achieving certain fluency level).
I recently earned my M.A. in Counseling. I have extensive experience in working with individuals (children, adolescents, adults), from diverse backgrounds. I remember the first time I helped a fellow classmate understand a concept in Spanish class. I love learning and love helping others expand their knowledge. I use creative methods, and am incredibly patient and easy going. I hope to be able to show my students that learning is fun.

A Little Bit About Me...

In 2007, I graduated from Penn State with a plan of attending graduate school for Creative Writing. I was devastated when I received three rejection letters from schools I admired. Instead of letting that devastation break me down, I accepted a job as an SAT/ACT Preparation Teacher at a learning center. After several weeks of successful, inspiring interactions with high school students in one-on-one sessions, I knew that the circuitous path that led me to this job was truly my destiny: I was meant to be a teacher.
