I would sit beside them while they played the pieces I had assigned to them to practice since the previous lesson. If they had problems or questions about something, I was there to help. We'd talk and laugh, and I hoped they learned through it all. Above all, I never wanted to yell at them or berate them, because I knew they'd never learn if they felt pressured or thought I was there only to critize them. The most important thing to me in teaching anyone anything is finding out what level they are currently at. In order to learn something, take something in and understand it, one must have something already to attach it to in their minds.
