I can tutor in early math and all fields of history due to my schooling in those areas. I like helping others with learning history because it is very interesting to me and important to talk about. Also I like teaching algebra because it is simple for me and is easy to teach. I would not mind teaching anyone if they are willing to learn and take on the complications they have on these subjects.

I have been teaching Information Technology at both the elementary and middle-school level in private schools in Northern Virginia for most of the last ten years. With both a Bachelor's Degree in History, and a Maser's degree in Network Information Systems, I am qualified to tutor in both the Social as well as the Computer Sciences, with an additional capability in Chemistry and Math at the advanced high school level.
I think that the most important aspect of tutoring is finding out why the student needs a tutor, and to get to the bottom of that, it is important to listen to the student and figure out what the barrier to learning has been. Once that is solved, whether it be a lack of interest in the subject, or simply a lack of aptitude for that subject (not all of us are math wizards, for example), I dev ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

I really enjoy being around kids and helping them learn new things. When you teach a kid something and they finally get it, the sight of their face lighting up is priceless. I believe that one should teach using a variety of methods because all kids do not learn the same way and each individual method shows something new each time. I believe that all kids can learn so much if they work as hard as they can and put forth maximum effort. I think it is very easy to learn/teach using as many hands on examples as possible.

Through earning my degree in biomedical science, I have accrued a significant amount of experience in both chemistry and biology. My passion has always been for the sciences, but I also minored in International Relations. I am well versed in all of the topics covered in my major and minor as well as several others. As a worker in employ of the school of sciences, I have been asked to tutor students in general and organic chemistry, physics and history and those students which I have tutored saw significant improvements in their test scores, while at the same time enjoying the experience of learning by understanding concepts, rather than memorizing information.

The joy that teaching and interacting with children brings is indescribable; there are few things that can match the satisfaction one feels when a pupil finally "gets it!" I believe that true education comes through understanding. Oftentimes students are taught tricks or rules to help them through a subject area, but I strive to bring my students to a point of clarity; I want them to be completely comfortable with the subject content because they understand it, not because they memorized a formula. Therefore, I am a firm believer in teaching the material and not simply teaching students how to answer a particular question.

My teaching style is a combination of different methodologies based on the needs of the person whom I am teaching. No one style will fit all persons but the main methods that I use are discussion (Q&A) and hands-on. I like to use visuals such as pictures, slides, and other presentation methods to make the history and or subject more interactive and mentally stimulating as well as memorable. I believe that the more a student is active in the classroom using their five senses the more that they will process and retain. I even like to put a dash or more of humor into each presentation to make the student feel at ease and let them know it is fun.

I believe that students of all ages respond to humor, honesty, and respect. Subjects in which that students have difficulty can be made accessible to them by demonstrating to them the humor in learning something hard and the fun of conquering the subject. Learing should be something students enjoy.
