I use all methods of second language acquisition in my teaching. Most of the exercises I use to help beginning are communicative methods. It's better to get them speaking and writing and build their confidence than to just use rote memorization or drills. If I think the audio-lingual method will help a more advanced student, I suggest and practice this method with them. If reading in the language with the translation side by side helps, we will practice that. I bear all forms of cognitive learning in mind when tutoring a student. I have taught English at a private school in Ansan, South Korea for 1 year from March 2009 to February 2010. I taught children from ages 5-14. This was a full time job. I take close consideration of each child’s ability in the language and cater to his or her individual needs. While teaching, I employ the constructivist learning theory. I begin with what the student knows and build off of their prior knowledge. To test what they know beforehand, I would administer a short pretest on some basic skills and once that test has been evaluated, I will begin teaching from the information with the least familiarity. As an undergraduate, I participated in two tutoring programs, over the span of two years, teaching middle school children afterschool and teaching Dominican immigrants during a summer ESL program. While in high school, I also was appointed by my high school principal to be an assistant instructor/tutor for an AP World History and AP U.S History course. While teaching and tutoring AP World History students, I helped my pupils prepare for both routine classroom exams and the AP exam by designing pneumonic exercises for facts, as well as coming up with creative ways of teaching reoccurring historic themes.
