My comments on tutoring Study Skills : I will focus on helping a student become organized, manage their time, and take notes effectively in class. Another important study skill is how to understand the contents of a textbook. I work with students to identify the important material in textbooks so they are not just reading the chapters, but they are also comprehending the information. We also practice test taking to reduce anxiety.

I believe I have the skills set and passion needed to successfully tutor a variety of students. I have a Specialist degree in Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment and I am a certified teacher with a master’s in Special Education. I currently teach adults studying for their GED. I also taught a self-contained, city-wide program in the District of Columbia Public School system for four years for students with multiple disabilities. I believe that learning through hands-on experience is the best way to fully comprehend material. I want to interest students in academics. Not every method works for every child; with one exception, patience. I demonstrate and exemplify patience. If a child feels as though they are in an atmosphere where they are safe, free of ridicule and bias, then they are willing to perform. This process can be a give take scenario however. So, some flexibility is required as well, but eventually the student will become more comfortable with themselves and confident in what they are capable of.
