Learning can be hard. Memorization can be hard. Knowing how to determine the proper equation to use in a chemistry or math equation can be hard. What I focus on with my students is not simply telling them the information and how they should go about finding the right answer but, more importantly, why the answer they are choosing is correct. What that does is to force them to learn the actual skill and when to use a given equation or what a sign or symbol indicates in terms of the type of problem they are trying to solve. By doing this, I find, the student is able to get to the core of not simply stuffing equations, grammar terms, or scientific terminology in their heads and then unloading them on the test. Rather - and this is my main objective with each student - they understand why their answer is right. They LEARN. An easy way to test this is when quizzing them and browsing thei ... read more

I love teaching. I earned my BA before I was old enough to vote. While my classmates were in his/her senior year, I was teaching. Eventually I earned my M.Ed. in Reading, then started School Administration and Adult Education. In all these fields I find similar necessary skills: patience, co-operation among staff and colleagues, knowledge of subject matter, communication with the community and parents and a well defined curriculum. Moreover, I am a published author and a former writer with St. Louis Globe Democrat - Suburban Journals. As a favor to my students, I often evaluate papers for subm ... read more

I love teaching students, especially when I get the chance to engage them one-on-one. I find that teaching in a public school, I do not get to do this nearly often enough, which disappoints me, for I feel that many students do not really connect with the learning process until they have individual, personal attention. Many of my students have told me how much they appreciate my high level of patience and how I will take the time to explain over and over again in different ways until they have completely understood. When teaching, I strive to reach all the different intelligences, thus I vary my activities widely. The most important element of the learning process, in my opinion, is helping the students apply what they have learned, and I center my lessons on helping students achieve the applications of the knowledge they accrue in my class.

There are many arrays of learning styles. I personally use visually, writing, and seeing the bigger picture. First, the mind can develop a concept or help map out the ideas by seeing the picture to the learning task. Second writing helps to reinforce the concept or idea. Lastly seeing the bigger picture helps to encompass their own ideas as well as the originator ideas.

Speaking to children of all ages comes naturally to me. My parents both love being teachers and have been in the game for over 30 years a piece! I traveled to schools to give presentations on my marine mammal experiences to grades K-8. I currently work for the Education Department at the Saint Louis ZOO where we strive to keep learning a blast! I believe learning sticks when it's fun and stumbled upon! A GOOD teacher can be a gift and set a fire in a child or young adult to take on the world! I love sharing my passion for learning and understanding. I hope it's contagious!
I have always had a knack for the sciences and left the Midwest to follow my love of Marine Biology. While in school, I revisted my interest in the arts (painting, piano, and animation). Learning is the first step to success, and I am a big advocate on academics. I take pride in teaching and making sure that the student is learning properly. I believe that children learn differently and what makes a good teacher/tutor you have to be able to teach children in the way that they can learn. My teaching strategy is getting to know the student as a person first and a student second. Knowing them helps me to understand their struggles in school and also with the class work. I will design a curriculum that will fit each student and their needs. As a tutor my overall goal is for the student to overcome their struggles in academics, as well as gain the confidence to succeed.
