A Little Bit About Me...

I can tutor in early math and all fields of history due to my schooling in those areas. I like helping others with learning history because it is very interesting to me and important to talk about. Also I like teaching algebra because it is simple for me and is easy to teach. I would not mind teaching anyone if they are willing to learn and take on the complications they have on these subjects.

I have my degree in Elementary Education. I have had experience teaching large class sizes, but I have also spent a lot of time in small group reading instruction, and I have worked in small group math. I tutored a kindergarten girl to improve her phonemic awareness. I tutored Language Arts in elementary school after school hours. I worked at a day care for 5 years and helped students with their homework after school.

Algebra I is one of my top subjects!

i am pretty relaxed and informal, but I expect students to do the work assigned. I help, but I don't do the work for them. I use Socratic questioning to get students to understand the material. I stress learning concepts and building on them as opposed to memorizing or guessing enough to pass a test.
I received a BS in Horticulture from Va. Polytechnic Institute and State University. majored in Biology (Botany) for 3 years at Virginia Commonwealth Univ. and College of William and Mary. Recently retook Precalculus, Calculus 1, Calculus 2, and Calculus 3 at Virginia Western Community College. I really enjoy being around kids and helping them learn new things. When you teach a kid something and they finally get it, the sight of their face lighting up is priceless. I believe that one should teach using a variety of methods because all kids do not learn the same way and each individual method shows something new each time. I believe that all kids can learn so much if they work as hard as they can and put forth maximum effort. I think it is very easy to learn/teach using as many hands on examples as possible.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that all students are capable of learning math. My goal is help each student understand math, and not just memorize steps. I accomplish this by using many methods to present material, including pictures, graphs, manipulatives, experiments, and physical movement. I have experience working with students of all levels of ability, and have enjoyed helping all of them.
When I was young, I chose to pursue a career in Software Engineering because it was a practical and exciting way to make use of my passion for math. After working for nine years, I became a full mother. I began volunteering at the schools every chance I could. When my children left elementary school behind, I realized I wanted to teach math. I have been a middle school teacher of math for 8 years. My positions have included teaching all math subjects from Math 6 to Geometry. In addition, I tutored stude ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

The joy that teaching and interacting with children brings is indescribable; there are few things that can match the satisfaction one feels when a pupil finally "gets it!" I believe that true education comes through understanding. Oftentimes students are taught tricks or rules to help them through a subject area, but I strive to bring my students to a point of clarity; I want them to be completely comfortable with the subject content because they understand it, not because they memorized a formula. Therefore, I am a firm believer in teaching the material and not simply teaching students how to answer a particular question.
I am a recent honors graduate of the Virginia Military Institute with a degree in civil and environmental engineering. This course of academic study exposed me to a broad range of upper-level mathematics, physics, and chemistry. During my college career I vo ... read more

I always wanted to be a teacher since I was a little girl. After earning both undergraduate and graduate degree in education, I taught first grade in both public and Christian schools for 5 years. Even though I am not currently teaching as my profession, I am still passionate about education and would love to continue to teach/tutor in small groups or one-on-one. Teaching through positive re-enforcement. Present concept, allow student to demonstrate understanding, and then use a step-by-step approach to find out where lack of understanding occurs. The instructor should always be as positive as possibe and try to make learning as enjoyable as possible.

A Little Bit About Me...

I believe that students of all ages respond to humor, honesty, and respect. Subjects in which that students have difficulty can be made accessible to them by demonstrating to them the humor in learning something hard and the fun of conquering the subject. Learing should be something students enjoy.
I taught 7th grade Language Arts for six years when I lived in Florida. I collaborated on the team that created the Orange County curriculum for teaching writing to the middle grades. This curriculum is still in use today. I worked for the Princeton Review as a tutor doing SAT preparation both privately and in a classroom setting. This was in preparation for both the verbal and math skills sections.

I am patient, friendly and flexible. At the same time, I am driven to see tangible progress in my work, so that, ultimately, the student achieves his or her goals. Being a teacher is not a job for me; rather, it is who I am. Teaching is my service to others.
