I believe that teaching through lecture and hands-on activities is the most effective. A student that is capable of "teaching" the teacher a lesson and explaining the subject in their own words will have a greater understanding of the subject. When I teach and tutor I explain to the student the topic in my words, and then continue to ask for feedback until the student is capable of explaining the lesson in their own words. While attending law school, I spent 2 full academic years tutoring first year law students. I tutored property and constitutional law. I am a strong believer in the Socratic style of teaching which, as you know, helps students themselves to think through issues and problems and discover the answer as we move along. I have always enjoyed leading students to that 'eureka' moment where they have grasped a difficult idea or concept, put it in their own words, and communicated it back to me, the teacher. I do believe that most children are capable of this kind of learning, at an appropriate level with their development, and do remember the information better than if they have learned something by rote, but not really understood it. Most of my tutoring experience has been working with 9-12th graders, which I have found to enjoy because the relationship between student and tutor is closer to a peer-peer relationship. My style of teaching includes mostly example problems and breaking down these problems into basic parts. I like to find example problems that are challenging to the student, but not to the point of frustration. I believe in identifying the learning style of the student which can take some time with some.
