My volunteer tutoring continued throughout my grade school years and into my higher education career. Once in college, I was hired as a mental health worker and tutor to austitic children. I have always excelled in reading comprehension, writing skills, and English communication classes. As a teacher I witnessed first hand the challenges students face in public schools. Due to the importance placed on standardized tests, students are often taught with a single focus in mind. Often times the different needs and learning styles of students are overlooked or ignored completely. I, on the other hand, prefer to take a holistic approach to education. Student’s goals should be clearly outlined and data driven. An individual learning plan should be designed for the student based on his or her strengths, weaknesses, and learning styles.
