I have been an elementary school teacher for nearly 18 years. I taught for 7 years in Elk Creek and 10 years in Los Molinos where I currently teach 2nd and 3rd grade. I earned Glenn County Teacher of the Year in 1998 and Tehama County Teacher of the Year in 2007. I was also named Glenn County Teacher of the Week for Channel 7 News in 1999. From 1992 to 1996 I trained in study skills for the History and Geology departments at Chico State through the Equity Services Office. This included a 3 hour training session each week in addition to tutoring individually and in groups for struggling college students. This was 4 of the greatest years ever! This University training really helped prepare me for the world of teaching and tutoring.

I always try to be very patient and supportive when I'm tutoring. I am a strong believer in the Socratic method of teaching, which from my understanding, means asking the student questions regarding what they already know about a concept in order to customize the lesson and/or "lead" them to the answer. I also try to use analogies and real life examples that are tailored according to the interests of my student. For example, if my student is interested in sports, then I try to use sports analogies and examples to describe difficult concepts. If my student is interested in science, then I use science analogies and examples, etc. I also try to break down complex concepts into smaller "pieces" so that I can help my student analyze and understand the concept one piece at a time. A Little Bit About Me...

During my time as a student studying Biological Sciences, I encountered varying levels of math and science ranging from statistics to calculus and basic biology to various types of advanced physiology. I have taken the opportunity to tutor fellow classmates and younger students in science through the biological honor society, Omicron Theta Epsilon. This is a highly interactive style which leads the student to uncover the answer themselves as opposed to the teacher simply reciting the answer to them. Guided Discovery requires the student to learn by doing therefore developing necessary problem solving and deductive skills that will make them better learners and thinkers both now and in the future. I do a demonstration while I lecture on a particular point, i.e., perspective, form, light, color theory, etc., then let them have time to execute a given assignment in class. At this point I give them personal attention. I have a "critque" at the end of the session and have them participate. I require constructive comments so as not to discourage anyone and to promote the notion that everyone has a unique and valuable point of view .
