My teaching style would be that of Guided Discovery. This is a highly interactive style which leads the student to uncover the answer themselves as opposed to the teacher simply reciting the answer to them. Guided Discovery requires the student to learn by doing therefore developing necessary problem solving and deductive skills that will make them better learners and thinkers both now and in the future. I implement this style by asking leading questions, giving examples, making analagies and asking the student what they think or ask them to explain how they came upon a certain conclusion. This ensures that the desired cognitive skills and strategies are being learned.

I strive to make connections to real life by using real specimens when possible, familiar situations, manipulatives, current events, and such to facilitate comprehension. I found from tutoring college students having difficulties with complex concepts such as protein synthesis, DNA replication, photosynthesis, and meiosis, that for all students, “hands on” can be a very helpful, and ultimately a more efficacious and expedient, way to teach.
