I started my college education in a community college, where i met many struggling students trying to improve their career opportunities. As a peer tutor at that school and in the jobs i have held since, I have developed a appreciation for the satisfaction that comes from assisting people with their coursework. I have an AAS and BS in Electrical and Computer Engineering Technology, a minor in physics and two years of experience as a formal tutor. I have tutored students in mathematics and the sciences as well as English and composition skills.
Most of the struggling students i have encountered seem to have a low confidence in themselves that interferes with their studies. My teaching style is adaptive. I believe everyone has the capacity to learn. The approach to learning is what makes the difference. Being a mother, I love children and am very patient. I also know that kids have their own distinct personalities and I address each child as an individual person, with their own talents and ideas. There is nothing better than when a person's face lights up, young or old, when they "get it." Knowing you have impacted a person, potentially for the rest of their life, is a reward in and of itself. The pay that comes attached to it is the bonus.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am a high energy type teacher. I like to do creative things to motivate my students and make them realize that learning math can be fun. Since I have tutored for many years I have a lot of patience and understanding for students that have difficulty understanding the material. I believe that anyone has the potential to learn, they just need time and a different approach to master the material. Everyone has different learning styles, it is just a matter of finding what works best for them.
I have taught mathematics for over 23 years. In Ohio I taught at a middle school for 2 years and then at an all boys high school for 17 years. In mathematics, I was taught early on that in order to prove something you need three things: 1. facts that are obvious/self-evident 2. relate them in a logical way 3. frame these facts and their relationships inside of a theory Engineering is just applied mathematics. I believe that anyone can do it, at their level; the key for an educator is to have sufficient people skills to diagnose the problem areas a given student might have and then address those in the context of solving a given problem.
During my time at NC State, I worked at the mathematics laboratory for two years. In that short amount of time, I learned as much as I taught. The experience of communicating technical information in a way that is accessible requires a set of skills that, in my humble opinion, will always be in demand.
