I usually start by teaching the general mechanics of the instrument, demonstrating the different features of the guitar and how they work. I believe that it is paramount that students learn how to tune their instrument before they can play it. I show them the techniques of working the fretboard and how to produce a proper tone. I will then assess the students knowledge of basic music theory and proceed based on that knowledge. My background is in music. My first formal training started taking piano lessons when I was eight years old. During my junior high and high school years I was in the band. My primary instrument was the trumpet. I also studied vocal music and took some classes in basic music theory. When I was seventeen years old I learned the guitar. I am often described as laid back. I focus on the key components of learning and students are surprised when they understand more than they thought that they did. With music, I enjoy beginners equally as well as more accomplished students. I also enjoy a good joke now and then. In public schools, I have taught all grades 7-12. I have taught high school physics, high school chemistry, high school biology, 7th grade science. I received a minor in chemistry that required me to also take the calculus series in high school. I have also taken some higher levels of math in college such as Differential Equations. I have also taught all levels of band from beginners to high school. I perform in two different groups. I enjoy playing jazz the most. I have a background in psychology that qualifies me to function as a counselor in public schools.

I get to know the student first and see how best he/she learns. and go from there. I have worked with so many different personalities that I have been able to help each the best I can with understanding and patience. Tutoring a subject that I also had to learn will make it easier to teach them the tools that I needed to do the same. I hope that by showing how I did and that it was doable that they too can do it. I was an American Read tutor at two elementary schools. I worked with kindergarteners and third graders to enhance their reading skills.
