LESSONS SHOULD ACCOMMODATE STUDENT LEARNING STYLES

My belief is that all students have different learning styles. Therefore lessons need to be individualized to meet student needs. In order to be successful students need to be engaged by creative teachers. My teaching experience has taught me to accommodate these needs when developing lesson plans.
I have 15 years of teaching experience with special needs students in a rural school district. During this time i provided private tutoring sessions for Elementary, Middle, High School and College students. At the college level my tutoring experience is with reading, writing, study skills and organization. Currently I develop educational programming for incarcerated youth.

A Little Bit About Me...

I very much enjoy working with children. I enjoy that as i teach them they are teaching me as well. Each individual child learns in their own different way not like that of any other. In my experience with special needs my most knowledge came from just watching their reaction to the curriculum. Each subject had different reactions the facial expression and their attention span to each subject. These very tools gave me the fuel to fire their education.

A Little Bit About Me...

I like to motivate with stories and interactive discussion. Most of my teaching involves drawing out someone's talents and inspiring them to reach for something better in themselves. I am a high school special education teacher with a primary focus on ELA. Currently, I co-teach in integrated classrooms, grades 9, 11, and 12, with regular education teachers and we have designed a curriculum focusing on intensive writing to assist our students in passing the NYS ELA Regents. We have a 91% passing success rate for both regular education and special needs students. My strategies with special needs students is designed around their disability and I work with them on “coping” mechanisms to level the playing field to allow them to be successful on exams and in life.
