I am a College Student studying English and Politics

I am a very firm believer that each human being has a different way of learning. I also believe that each subject has a different way to be taught. I teach based off of my students, as well as the subject.
I was a tutor in high school for many elementary and middle school aged children. I am also experienced with writing papers, so I can help anyone who is writing for a college application or essay. I am a very quick learner, so if there is a subject I am not as familiar with I am willing to study it to help a student. My goal is to help students understand the context being taught, as well as teach them the importance of this knowledge. I have often used the phrase "When will I ever need this?" and I have learned later on in life that each subject is important. This is the messageI want to get across to children, that learning new things is a very important aspect of life.

A Little Bit About Me...

My job is not to give students answers, but to push them to articulate better and give better answers. I teach not by lecturing but by discussion; together we work through problems and questions. By showing students (gently) where their thinking could be improved without giving them the actual answers, I push students to solve problems on their own. My teaching strategies were recognized with teaching awards at UVA and at UNC-Pembroke.
I have earned a PhD in philosophy from the University of Virginia, and taught at the university level at Virginia Tech, UVA, Hampden-Sydney College, West Point, and the University of North Carolina at Pembroke for ten years. During that time, I have taught philosophy, logic (including test prep for the GRE and LSAT), and composition. A chemistry minor in college, I am also proficient in basic science and mathematics. I have tutored in composition ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is the same as my parenting style. Establishing high expectations and an environment where students are provided the academic tools they need, as well as care and concern, have been the keys to my success. I have learned that all children strive to please their parents, and their teachers when they know that the teacher is invested in their success. I also seek to instill an "I can do it" attitude in my students because many have struggled and developed a negative attitude about academics. The student and I work together as a team. When one succeeds, so does the other. I include parents in each success so that the student is supported across all settings.
Throughout my years of teaching I have taught students with a broad range of abilities and needs. At the middle school level I have provided instruction in math, English, science and social studies. In high sc ... read more

I have taught Rhetoric and Composition and Business Writing at Penn State, UNC-Charlotte, and Winthrop University. I also taught the 8th grade briefly at a private school. I have always received great feedback from my students.
My responsibility as a teacher is to ensure that students leave my classroom more knowledgeable than when they entered. Since my students will come in at varying levels and with different needs, their success must be measured on an individual basis. I want my students to improve in five specific areas by the end of the of my course: 1) the aspects of writing that they recognize as problem areas at the beginning of the learning process; 2) the areas that I identify throughout the semester; 3) the skills necessary to become more critical and analytical readers; 4) the recognition, articulation, and reevaluation of their burgeoning worldviews; and 5) the deve ... read more

I evaluate each student as a unique learner and measure success through achievement of desired outcomes. My students are successful because I prepare efficiently, deliver instruction professionally, and I believe in their ability to achieve their personal goals. More About This Tutor...

During the four years that I spent at UNC-Charlotte pursuing my double undergraduate degrees I gained a broad array of knowledge and skills. I graduated in 2004 with a BS in Economics and a BS in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance. In both of my degrees I graduated in the top of my class due to my desire to learn and my dedication to my commitments. Through my studies, extracurricular activities, and my work experiences, I have developed a good understanding of various subject matters. Some of these subjects include finance, economics, accounting, calculus, statistics, computers, study skills, time management skills, and interpersonal skills. During my time as an undergraduate I also was involved in mentoring and tutoring freshmen and other students in various subjects.

A Little Bit About Me...

As someone who entered teaching later in life, I began where most of my education to that point allowed, as a social studies teacher. I taught 5 years as a middle school social studies teacher. Recently ,I added middle school math certification and taught middle school math for a year. My tutoring experience has primarily been working after class with my students.
My teaching style has been a product of working primarily with middle school kids. I believe that the hands on approach is the best way to reach these students. Using visual aids, manipulatives, foldables, and other materials provided can be extremely useful tools to reach them. Being actively involved in the learning process allows students to learn while they do not realize it.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have a BA in English from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and graduated in 1986. I am also a former officer in the North Carolina Army National Guard. For the last 12 years I have been in the business world, and that is where I have used my degree the most. I bring to the table real world English skills. On average, I produced 8 – 10 written documents per month that my employees used as their guide in the performance of their duties, each tailored to a specific situation. Some very detailed, some not so detailed. To produce these documents, I read approximately 3 other documents along with my job experience.
My teaching style I would describe two-fold: First, my military background taught me their three step process; tell them what you are going to tell them, tell them, and then tell them what you told them and my own personal style which is a hybrid of the ... read more

In Medical School, Residency and practice I have always been expected to be in the simultaneous role of student, teacher, mentor and tutor. I can say I have a vast amount of training and expereience in science, physics, chemistry, mathematics, as well as the liberal arts. I believe that my teaching style is very hands on and easy to follow. I have the ability of simplifying statistical and mathematical procedures into easier, more understandable terms. I am very patient and this allows me to better adapt to a child's specific learning needs and education level. My best teachers were the one's that made me feel comfortable asking questions and admitting when I do not fully understand a concept. I hope to apply this teaching style to my own in order to make my pupils feel the same way.
In 2009 I graduated with a BS in Statistics from Virginia Tech. I also received a minor in Business. Before recently moving to Charlotte, NC I worked as a contracted consultant for a company called Mountaineer Capital LLP in Charleston, WV. I feel this experience along with extensive knowledge of math and sciences makes me capable of teaching others.
