I have been one of the tutors on the Adult Learning Center staff at the Johnson County Public Library in Franklin, Indiana since 1998, and my tutoring work has mostly been concentrated in teaching English for the past eleven years. I also spent approximately three years (2002-2005) tutoring boys at the Indiana Juvenile Correctional Facility (Indiana Boy’s School), covering mostly English, math and GED preparation. My education focused heavily on English and math, having taken the most advanced courses in each discipline. Writing is thinking. If I can get my students to think, I can get them to write better. We sit down with interesting texts, thought-provoking texts, and figure out what the author was trying to say and how. Then we try to do the same thing ourselves. Part of that is learning the rules of grammar, but I value those only because they let me and my students say what we mean. My classes focus on getting what we mean onto the page, and making that as interesting as possible to the writer and the reader. After twenty-five years in book and magazine publishing, I decided to do something that mattered, so I went back to school, got a master's degree, and began teaching. Seeing the look and smile on the face of a student that finally grasps a concept, or realizes they have just read on their own for the first time, OH What a Feeling!!! I have 33 successful years experience as a guitarist/songwriter/publisher in Nashville. I was staff guitarist for Hee Haw and other TV shows. I have performed on recordings, television and/or in concert with 25 members of The Country Music Hall of Fame. I am currnetly touring the world with singer - songwriter Don McLean - who wrote and recorded AMERICAN PIE and VINCENT. I teach in a personal, adaptive and responsive style. I listen first, identify the needs of the student and develop a one on one approach to raise their proficiency. My teaching style has been developed from my experience in volunteer literacy tutoring with Hispanic immigrants, and substitute teaching in Davidson and Williamson County Schools. I graduated from Arkansas State University in 1974 and taught third grade for seven and a half years, then moved to another town and taught 5th grade resource for six years. I relocated to Tennessee and taught high school special education for seven years. After deciding that I enjoyed teaching younger children, I transferred to Cheatham Middle School, where I presently teach fifth grade inclusion.
