Most of the struggling students i have encountered seem to have a low confidence in themselves that interferes with their studies. I believe this is due to the manner in which students are tested; in order to fully understand a concept, the student has to be able to explain the concept and its application in his/her own words. By starting from the basic concept of the field of study and working up, the student can acquire real knowledge of the subject. Tutoring is not just about improving grades, although that is the most obvious result. It is about allowing the student to feel the pride of success, and learn how to transfer newly learned skills in one subject to other unrelated subjects. I truly believe that every student can be successful. Sometimes the pathway to success is not always visible to the student; a competent teacher can point the way. It is extremely rewarding as an educator to open up that pathway to the student, especially so in the sciences.
