I like to teach using examples, either on a board to show a person step by step first. Then try to give the student examples to try to solve themselves. If this does not work I continue to breakdown a problem until we can clearly identify where the student is having trouble.

How I was trained to tutor students was to have them explain the material to me, instead of giving blatant answers, or if we don't know we could review the textbook, the notes, or look it up in another resource. Not only does this give the student the correct and complete answer, it allows them to retain study skills which will be vital down the road in other courses and reinforces great study habits.
