I have always loved to teach, and loved to travel and meet new people. This led to traveling for a summer during college to Mexico City, living with a Spanish-speaking family. I also spent twelve weeks in West Africa teaching ESL and speaking French before my senior year at OBU. After graduation, I lived in Northern California (where I had also spent a summer during college), teaching ESL to adult Mexican immigrants, tutoring middle-school Korean students, and spending one summer in Southeast Asia while earning a Masters and TESL certificate. I now confidently teach ESL writing and grammar at a community college, as well as tutor children in ESL for a local public school. I also home school an advanced first grader.

My teaching style is in form of participation. I like my students to be part of the lessons. I believe teaching (or education) is not a one person show. The best way for to students to learn is by making them participate. It is not just a matter of giving lectures and tests. It is a matter of involving them also in the lectures.

Since receiving my masters I have completed 127 additional college hours which certified me to teach journalism, social studies, English, computers, and humanities at both middle and the high school levels. Traveling extensively through many nations has enhanced my teaching of all social studies subjects as well as customs around the world. A Little Bit About Me...

I generally try to remain as friendly as possible with the tutee so that he/she can relax and learn in a comfortable environment. I work on a first-name basis and try to make sure that the student is LEARNING, rather than merely finishing his/her homework. I teach using a Platonic method, asking prodding questions and getting the tutee to figure out the material him/herself. Occasionally, I have to teach in a more stern and disciplined manner b/c the student is distracted or doesn't feel like doing the work. In these cases, I remain disciplined to emphasize how important learning the material is but do not speak or act harshly.
While studying at the University of Oklahoma, I became interested in tutoring and helping those less fortunate. I began tutoring at a program called Tuesday Tutors which provides free-of-charge tutoring to all students Junior High level and above (altho ... read more

More About This Tutor...

As a graduate of the University of Oklahoma, I began my teaching career in mathematics at the junior high school level. I taught Algebra I to eighth graders. While teaching, I returned to school and received my M.Ed as a Reading Specialist. After working in that area for a few years, I became an inner city high school principal. I remained in that capacity for approximately twenty years. I was searching for a new challenge and joined the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education to administer an AmeriCorp grant called Smart Start for Brain Gain 2010. In that capacity I worked with colleges and public schools throughout Oklahoma to develop tutoring and mentoring programs in reading and mathematics. Once the grant ran out, I returned to the classroom and am currently the Reading Specialist for Moore High School in Moore,Oklahoma.

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy working with students of all levels. I have a patient easy going nature and feel the only dumb question is the one not asked. My goals are to enable the student to not only master the subject matter but to incorporate that knowledge and be able to relate it to other disciplines. I always taught a section in the classroom on how to study effectively. I feel that if you make the difference in one student’s life then your career was a success. My career was successful many times over.
Due to my changing Majors as a junior, I received a Bachelors Degree with a double major, Biology and Education. My Minor was in English. I was pleasantly surprised when my Certificate in Oklahoma qualified me to teach seventeen fields. A Little Bit About Me...

I prefer one-on-one conversation in a question-and-answer format (Socratic method). However, sometimes a straightforward explanation is needed. For math tutoring, the best results come from working through problems step-by-step.
I have been teaching at the college level for 6 years, and I have 2 years of earlier experience at the middle school level as well. My BS in Electrical Engineering enables me to tutor effectively in math and science, and my PhD in Philosophy qualifies me for Science, History, and some writing help (I have published in peer-reviewed journals). I have often tutored privately for friends and family, and they tell me I do a very good job.

A Little Bit About Me...

I attended a preparatory school in Junior High and High School. I then went on to Mississippi College where I obtained a Bachelor degree in Home Economics with an emphysis on Fashion Merchandising. When I became a mom, I decided to home school my kids so that I could take an active part in their education and I could guide them in ways that someone else might not find interesting or important.
I love to learn and everyone learns differently. I believe that if the information is not being understood one way, then we need to find another way to instruct. Hands-on learning and learning through experience always leaves a lasting impression. Just memorizing facts, although in some cases that is necessary, it is just not fun for all students and just may not stick unless learned in a fun way. I want to make learning fun because no one should ever stop learning. There is just too mu ... read more
