A Little Bit About Me...

I graduated with a degree in earth science education in 1995. I worked for several years as a substitute teacher and then returned to college to gain biology certification. I worked at a local high school for five years teaching seventh grade science and senior high general science. For the last six years I have worked for a head start program. I am currently doing subsitute teaching again and would love to help students be successful by providing tutoring. Over the years I have worked with a variety of age levels of students and thier families.

First, in order for the students to best understand the material, I break it down to their level. For subjects like math, it is simple to develop a step by step method for the students to write down and follow. Once the students have mastered the steps they are motivated to continue with the material because it seems straightforward. It is also important to have the students connect to the material; if they understand how the information is used in every day life then they will become more excited and motivated to learn. Because of my experience in teaching my own children, I have discovered that no child is too young to learn. Often people will not consider an infant or toddler a "functioning human being" until the child can speak. This is so inaccurate! I taught one of my daughters to read at age four. My teaching style is to engage the student on a personal level through cheerful conversation and sharing of interests, then to assess learning styles, strengths, and challenges.
