As a Regent's Scholar at UC Davis, I sought to develop skills in both the sciences and the liberal arts. As such, I earned two bachelors degrees, a BS in Civil/Environmental Engineering with an emphasis in Environmental Engineering, and a BA in Japanese. I have an extensive background in math and science, particularly in physics and chemistry, due to the former. I also have a plethora of experience in writing persuasive essays, technical papers, and research papers. I believe that being an effective tutor involves tailoring my style to the way the student learns. That is why I pay close attention to what seems effective for each student. During High School I taught at a science camp for 3 years. After college I went and lived in China and taught university level ESL for 3 years. I have worked for a few local tutoring organizations in the last 2 years as well as doing private tutoring. I have worked with ages 8-24 for tutoring and teaching and I have taught/tutored English, Math, Science, and history up through the 8th grade level. I studied Math because I love the subject. I have received a BA and am pursuing my Masters. During the last ten years I have taught math classes to middle school students as well as college students. I strive to make connections to real life by using real specimens when possible, familiar situations, manipulatives, current events, and such to facilitate comprehension. I found from tutoring college students having difficulties with complex concepts such as protein synthesis, DNA replication, photosynthesis, and meiosis, that for all students, “hands on” can be a very helpful, and ultimately a more efficacious and expedient, way to teach.
