Some people learn by talking, some tactically by doing, some visually by example. It depends on the student, or I devise a presentation that involves all three ways of presenting the information. I believe that learning and understanding the value of what is being learned is as important as the content.
I am a doer who has shared his knowledge and experience in a variety of ways. I subscribe to the principle: tell them what you are going to tell them, tell them, tell them what you have told them. To avoid mind-numbing repetition, I present the material with a combination of text and pictures, then review the material with ungraded short answer exercises ("active learning – I do and I understand"). Then we summarize. I also connect what the student is learning with previous course content to promote learning by association. I use a variety of exercises to reinforce content, including case studies, diagram creation and annotation, group discussion (where a group is available).
