Microsoft Excel is one of my top subjects!

Laid back. I like to discover with the student, teaching them how to teach themselves in a way. My learning style, and therefore my teaching style, has always been to break a lesson down to its simplest form, and tweaking it to fit various situations. This way, the lesson is easier to remember, like learning to ride a bike.
I am currently a returning student at Arkansas State University, majoring in Computer Science, and minoring in Math and Graphic Design. I previously attended Arkansas Tech University, but withdrew due to financial reasons. In 2005, I became employed at Mid-South Community College, where my duties included helping students with computer questions and issues, as well as tutoring a few students in math. During my employment there, I taught a 5-week Intro to Computers course. The class consisted of a mix of traditional and non-traditional students.

My teaching style includes using the strengths of the interests of the child in teaching. To aid my child to read, I used his favorite card game (Yugioh) to aid him. I am hands on while teaching. I make sure that the learning is not boring. I will use card games to aid in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. I use a combination of words plus visuals to aid the learner. I will write down the formulas or work out a problem for the student so that the example can be followed on other problems. I use acronyms for teaching as well. I also use these aids to help with memorization of facts.

I believe in constant verbal quizzing and repitition as a means to develop the child's ability to retain knowledge and call it forth at will. I have learned from past work experiences that all people learn differently be it either visual, kinetic (hands-on), or verbal (by listening). My teaching style has always been "learner-centered". I've always checked first to see what the students' needs were and what their learning style was before I made lesson plans. I have found that if I find something the student is interested in learning and present it in a way that he/she likes, then the student is more likely to engage in the lesson. I've always used the internet as a resource to find the most creative ways of presenting otherwise boring information. I have also found that a lot of support helps the student in the long-run instead of a "sink or swim" approach. Growing up, I was always very gited academically. I never struggled with school, and learning was an easy pleasure. I graduated as valedictorian, and when I got to college I started tutoring to help others that had more difficulty in class.
