My comments on tutoring Special Education : I have worked with special needs students and persons for more than 30 years. I attended Cedarville University and Wright State University to receive training in teaching MR and LD. I taught in a self-contained classroom with 25 MR, EH, LD, and S&L special needs students for 4 years. I was also the Special Ed. Coordinator for my district for 5 years, administering academic testing as well as writing the full evaluations on prospective special needs students. I was also an LD tutor for several yers in two different schools, working with students from 1st-8th grade. I learned to use a number of different teaching strategies, including Orton-Gillingham Phoetic Approach, and teaching math via color coding and working on lines from left to right.

My teaching style is very hands-on, involving pictures, manipulatives, and tactile modalities. I like to use a dry-erase board to demonstrated concepts as well as allow the student to practice. I take them step-by-step through a new concept, giving a lot of verbal positive reinforcement to praise effort as well as achievement.
I received my training from Cedarville University, Wright State University, Plymouth State College and Keene State College. I received my BA from Cedarville University in Elementary Education with an Emphasis in Special Education. As an adult I realized that my true calling was teaching, and I advanced my education to become an educator. I was a tutor while in college. I tutored students in History, Accounting, and Greek. I was a double major:Accounting and Christian Ministry. I was a substitute teacher in Indiana from 1990-1994. I taught everything from Kindergarden to High School. I was a couple of teacher's personal sub. I also was involved with the program that dealt with students with developmental disabilites. Currently, I am homeschooling my daughter. She is very gifted, so we are letting her interests lead us. She is the hardest one I have ever taught, but that is because I am so close to her.
My teaching style is based on the student. One teaching style does not fit everyone. I have to see how the student learns and then adapt my teaching style to meet his or her needs. I love helping people, and especially when they get it. That is so rewarding.

Young people learn through different ways and means. I try to discern the best method to instruct any particular student with whom I am tutoring at the time. I like to give examples of problems, and "problem solve" with the student through illustrative examples on paper or on the board. I encourage questions and feedback to ensure that the young person is indeed learning "how" to solve a problem, not simply to "get" a solution.
