I received my B.A. in English from Appalachian State University where I also received training in education. Afterward, I became an instructor at Richmond Community College, teaching basic reading and math to adults with learning disabilities as well as a course on PC literacy & business training. In addition to classroom instruction, I've had one-on-one experience tutoring university students in English and Learning Skills.
I strongly believe that the success of education depends on how well it targets a student's learning style and values. Everyone can learn, but individual attention is a vital part of that. I studied Art History at Florida State University, which required a number of essay and extensive seminar classes, which taught me different ways to complete 10-20 page papers. I have worked teaching children in many different environments, in a preschool, Boys and Girls club, and at their homes. I have worked with children all ages from one to fifteen, with language and basic math skills.

In order to effectively teach, I feel it is important to recognize and understand each student's metacognitive learning style. Once that is understood the material can be introduced to them in a way that they can perceive. I also feel that it is important to empower students to have the confidence to think for themselves and understand their own ability to make connections about the material.
