I like to get a sense of what the student already knows and try to build on that knowledge.
I have tutored on a volunteer basis with the Holyoke Tutor/Mentor Program for more than a year. I have also tutored privately. My experience has been with adults, however, I would like to add experience working with secondary school students. I can help with SAT's, MCAS, and just provide support for a student who needs some extra help.

With the right attitude, math can be conquered -smiling!

As I attended Asnuntuck Community I volunteered as a math and desktop tutor. I was so well liked the State of Connecticut hired me after graduation where I still work today (Saturdays). I'm near a Bachelors Degree with an emphasis in math. I regularly receive requests through my director at the college for private tutoring.
I prefer the whiteboard and technology such as calculators and online practice software.

I believe the best way for someone to learn something is through application and repetition. As both a tutor and youth lacrosse coach I have had success by teaching my students how to approach problems rather than simply giving them answers. I am extremely patient and am very willing to take alternative approaches in helping a student learn.
During my undergraduate career at the University of Massachusetts Amherst, I obtained a wealth of knowledge in the fields of math and science. I did this by striving for excellence in the classroom and participating in cutting edge research with professors in the Entomology and Organic Chemistry departments. My extensive knowledge of the subjects I’ve studied has allowed me to assist my friends in understanding complex and difficult problems. This past year I privately tutored classmates in both Statistics and Organic Chemistry.

A Little Bit About Me...

My experience with tutoring, employee training and working with my own two children has shown me that there are many different learning styles and paces. It is exciting to find that key for each person and watch their growth and development through learning. Up front, I believe it is important to understand the goals of the student and their family and then focus on providing the support necessary to see them achieve and exceed those goals.
Following my graduation from the University of Connecticut I pursued a career in the insurance industry but have also spent time working as a youth group leader and worked as a part-time tutor for several years. While living in Connecticut I tutored homebound high school age children who were either out on medical leave or expelled for disciplinary purposes. I am proud to report that in addition to several other students, I provided tutoring ... read more

I stress teaching fundamental principles through an interactive teaching style where students actively participate in learning and solving problems. It is important that students understand fundamental concepts. Relying solely on rote memorization of facts will not lead to success science and math. For younger students I use hands-on demonstrations and visual aids as tools to teach basic scientific principles in a fun and active environment. For more advanced students I teach how to apply fundamental principles to solve problems. I work through typical example problems with them to illustrate practical application of principles. I then ask students to solve problems themselves to develop and ensure understanding.

I enjoy getting the student excited about what they are learning by showing them the practical and useful side of what they are being taught. I believe that when learning is fun and students enjoy what they are learning they will do better. I try to use a hands on approach so that the student learns by doing. I provide lots of examples and change my teaching methods according to each students needs. I am open to all questions and try to answer all of them. I try to show the student applications of the math I'm teaching, not just formulas and ways things are calculated. I will not leave the student without an answer to his questions. I'm very thorough.
i have my bachelor's degree in mathematics. I also have experience tutoring people who want to get their GED and high school students. I have always loved math, back to elementary school, and I have always done well at it. When I was a Junior high school student, I started an advanced program in mathematics from columbia university. I was in the program throughout my junior high and high school years.

A Little Bit About Me...

Working with middle school students is an adventure. The students all have different ways of learning, so blackboard work is a great way for them to visualize, and I also use 3 dimensional models when they are appropriate. My experience showed me that the students that wanted to learn would stay after school to get more individualized attention, which I was always available to give them. That moment when they understood the math concept I was teaching was the best part.
I am very good at math, so in college I got into the tutoring program for inner city elementary students and the student I tutored showed remarkable improvement in her math grades as a result. Many years later I was accepted into the Alternate Route to Certification II program and received my Math 7-12 teaching certificate in May 2003.
