I'm Here to Help!!!

I have often thought about becoming a teacher and have been told by friends, families and previous instructors in my own learning I would make a good one but I feel my personality would be better served in a more laid back and less rigid atmosphere. I am very laid back, amiable and have a strong passion for what I've learned and what I do (the whole aspiring writer thing I mentioned earlier).
I am a twenty eighty year old graduate of the University at Albany where I received my Bachelors in English Lit. in 2011. I have no previous teaching or tutoring experience but that does not mean I lack the knowledge or skill necessary to help one learn and grow. I am an avid reader and aspiring writer and try to put thought to paper every day.

Seek first to understand and then to be understood.

I have taught English at the secondary school level in New York City. I have also worked for publishing companies and edited books, magazine articles, and press releases. In the last decade I have worked within the State University System of New York in the grants and contracts field. I have written grants and administered grants monies for program use.
I enjoy an interactive style with students rather than relying on teaching straight from the text book or using a lecture format.

A Little Bit About Me...

After graduating college I taught elementary K-8th grade in NYC. I taught for one year and decided to live Paris, France teaching English. I lived in Paris, France for 1.5 years then moved to Rome, Italy, again teaching English. My experiences were wonderful as I met people who really enjoyed learning English and needed it for work. After 6 months I returned to the states and taught at a Junior High School on the Lower eastside of NYC. I left teaching after 10 years to market computers. My skills as an educator served me well and I did extremely well. After approximately 8 years I decided I wanted to go back to teaching, and have been teaching the use of computers. I enjoy helping individuals to increase their skills and achieve success!
As I read the example noted below, I hear an echo, YES, I too love to teach. I see myself as a mentor. Listening and watching how people learn, wh ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

One of the things I enjoy more than anything is helping someone to understand not only the specific principals of the subject matter, but the WHYS and WHEREFORES so that as that student encounters real world examples he/she will quickly be able to adapt and be successful. I am a patient teacher who "has been there" and wants to help anyone I can.
I have been working as a company CFO and VP Finance in excess of 40 years. There is virtually nothing I do not know regarding accounting and finance. This will provide students with real world experience as well as the principals required in a course study. I also have expert experience in Excel and Word. In addition, during this time I have been instrumental in tutoring employees who have worked for me. This numbers in the hundreds over the years. I no longer work full time and am highly motivated to help others in my chosen sub ... read more

More About This Tutor...

As a tutor, I hope to continue to find fulfillment in facilitating enjoyable learning and in giving students the individual attention that is needed to succeed. I have long been interested in alternative teaching methods, including Waldorf-Steiner and Montessori styles of teaching, for the way that they focus on holistic and hands-on learning. I value an approach to teaching that is empathetic and is tailored not only to what a student needs, but to his or her current strengths and abilities.
My experience as a teacher has nurtured within me a deep respect for children as thinkers, and ultimately "real" people. In my position at Spence's Farm, I was responsible for a group of 5-8 year olds. I enjoyed being with kids, who inspired me to observe and innovate, two talents that I had to perfect in order to develop fun and effective lesson plans and field trips. I also observed that chi ... read more

As a person who truly values learning, I have continuously engaged in being both a student and a teacher in academically rigorous studies. With over 14 years of professional education experience, including high school Honors and Advanced Placement English and college counseling, I possess a strong background in teaching various learning styles and needs to be successful in challenging classes. A Little Bit About Me...

At my Ivy League college, we were taught not just facts, but how to learn. This invaluable skill has stood me well and put me in an excellent position to teach. I have continued to love to learn and retained my strengths in both critical reading and in math. I recently took the SAT to demonstrate my qualification for tutoring and scored in the 98th percentile. I have always had a knack for taking a complicated topic and being able to explain it simply and clearly. I can tell when students do not completely understand – despite what they may say – and will stick with a concept until it is demonstrably clear. I have tutored colleagues in computer programs, taught an adult class at the community college and tutored students in English as a Second Language and in math.
I believe teaching is more than just showing how to solve a problem, but is helping the student to discover the “big ... read more

I started tutoring in 1995. At the present time I am working as a Special Ed. Reading Tutor for the East Hartford School system. I started out tutoring middle school and high school students in basic math, reading, english, and social studies.
I love teaching using examples all around, as well as, painting a word picture which students understand. It is very important for me to know my audience. This helps me in how I should present the information.

I received a technology degree in 1975. Several years later I returned to college to persue a Physics/Mechanical Engineering Degree from SUNY New Paltz and RPI. I was an "A" student in Physics and enjoyed tutoring many classmates. I was a guest lecturer several times at RPI. Due to work and family commitments I did not complete the degree. My wife and I homeschooled our children through the primary grades. I taught sciences. While an Employee at IBM, I wrote and taight technical courses. Physics is my forte and I love talking about and teaching the subject. I am especially helpfull to students challenged by word problems. Throughout college I would host study groups in Physics and Chemistry. I currently am a financial advisor.

A Little Bit About Me...

My goal is to help your child achieve success. I explain real-life applications of the subject (i.e., metric system--repair of foreign cars.) I encourage questions and dialogue. I use praise when warranted but am firm on deadlines and honesty. Aware of attention span, I take appropriate breaks or switch to another subject. I remind him to read and follow directions and to check his work over before he hands it in. I believe that in this fast-paced technical age your child needs the best chance possible to compete successfully. I have found that even with one exposure, a good educator can have a huge positive impact upon a student's confidence and comprehension. It is very gratifying to both student and teacher when this occurs.

A Little Bit About Me...

I am permanently certified in Secondary English. I have been teaching since 2001. I have also tutored for eight years. My teaching experience covers English grades seven through twelve. I have taught general English classes, honors English classes, college prep courses, special education courses, English labs, English as a Second Language, SAT Prep, and GED level classes.
The stand that I firmly take as a teacher of English Language Arts is that preconceived notions of a student's ability are left outside the door to my classroom. Every student has a different personality, a different belief system, a different home life, and a different style he/she learns best in. However, every student can learn to write and communicate clearly, and to read and appreciate literature when provided with a rich learning environment, motivation, and explanation of the purpose/learning goals behin ... read more

Over the years, I have had the ability to work in various grade levels in various school districts. During my student teaching I had the chance to teach first and fourth grade. After graduating, I subbed in many school districts throughout the Capital Region. I worked as a teacher's assistant in a self-contained classroom serving children between first and third grade. I had the opportunity to work one on one with them and contribute to helping them successfully reach some of their IEP goals. I currently work as a Pre-k teacher in a local elementary school and work to meet their indiviual needs every day.
Teaching is my passion! I believe that every child has a person learning style and that once a teacher can tap into the child's interests and find a way to engage them in their own learning, this will lead the child on a road to success!
