Teacher Who Can Teach Any Student!

I do not ever yell or scare my students into behaving the way I have seen many teachers do. With many students this does not work. I respect my students and in turn they respect me. This creates an atmosphere where students want to behave for me.
Taught in Greenwood and Greenville county schools 12 years. I taught reading recovery, resource, and self contained classrooms. Before that I was an ABA line therapist for students with autism. I have a degree in Elementary Education with a specialization in Special Education. I am certified as a Elementary and Special Education teacher through the SC state Department of Education. I now own my own tutoring business Shining Stars Tutoring LLC.

My comments on tutoring Poetry : I have taught poetry in grades 7-12 and on the university level.

Student centered instruction is the approach I use in my instruction. That means that the student's needs and learning style direct the way the information will be delivered and activities that will guide the learning. Students learn best by doing, so I only lecture for small amounts of time.
I have taught for 12 years in both a private and public school in Greenville, SC. I am currently teaching at Anderson University but in the classroom and on-line. In grades 7-12 I have taught English literature and writing as well as drama courses. At Anderson University I teach English 101, 102, and 205.

Relaxed but exacting.
I have tutored writing at the college level since 1985 when I finished a formal course in tutoring methods. Since then, I have tutored writing and other subjects for people as young as 12 through college-age. For 15 years, I also taught college writing courses including basic writing, English composition, research composition, creative writing, and advanced poetry writing. Additionally, I scored 198 out of 200 on the literature Praxis examination, which is a national teacher certification exam. Education, teaching in particular, gives individuals the opportunity to give back what they have received. It is communication on a broader level than just simply putting forth information to whomever chooses to accept it. I started my career in education before I set foot on a college campus, through a peer-tutoring program in my high school. This experience allowed me to work with severely disabled peers learning functional skills for independence. Since then I have worked as an aide in emotional/behavior and multiple-disability middle school classrooms, as well as LD-resource, ED self contained and SC occupational diploma program. In addition I have earned a degree of distinction with the National Forensic League, been name a scholar-athlete in South Carolina and a host of other accolades in scholarship. A Little Bit About Me...

My teaching style is the same as my parenting style. Establishing high expectations and an environment where students are provided the academic tools they need, as well as care and concern, have been the keys to my success. I have learned that all children strive to please their parents, and their teachers when they know that the teacher is invested in their success. I also seek to instill an "I can do it" attitude in my students because many have struggled and developed a negative attitude about academics. The student and I work together as a team. When one succeeds, so does the other. I include parents in each success so that the student is supported across all settings.
Throughout my years of teaching I have taught students with a broad range of abilities and needs. At the middle school level I have provided instruction in math, English, science and social studies. In high sc ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

What I have discovered about myself is that I learn differently from other people. I am the kind of person who prefers to set aside that assembly instruction manual and put together that Christmas toy by laying out the pieces in an orderly fashion. There is so much pleasure in problem solving. I learn by asking myself questions. I have little patience for mundane drills and memorization if they can be avoided. Each child is different. It is meaningless to say that a child is intelligent. There are many kinds of intelligences. Some children are more intelligent in memorization. Others are intelligent in solving problems. It is best to discover the child's strengths and weaknesses and adapt a program to each and every child.
I love learning and the precision arts such as mathematics. This has driven me to begin in a computer career. I spent almost two decades applying ... read more
