More About This Tutor...

My teaching philosophy is to get students to think about science as a process, and to individualize their learning experiences. I prompt them to “why” and “how” questions at every stage.
Progressing through graduate school and working as a undergraduate student demonstrator allowed me to define learning as a personal process of growth. Being able to ask questions and actually attempt to answer those questions was extremely motivating. Involving and motivating students presents its challenges, but my goal of individualizing learning creates an open and comfortable environment where students can feel free to ask questions, make mistakes, and challenge themselves. It is by breaking down the barriers to learning that students can face their own misconceptions.

A Little Bit About Me...

I enjoy working with children and young adults. I attempt to find the methods/means by which the student learns best. My initial objective is to ascertain the student’s learning goals. Then I familiarize myself with the material with which the student is currently working, so as to develop a successful learning approach. This is an ongoing process as the student progresses. I am patient and considerate of any learning problems the student may have, and adjust my teaching methods accordingly, although I am not an expert in learning disabilities. My ultimate goal, however, is to facilitate the student’s success in learning, and hopefully teach him/her how to learn independently.

I graduated from IUP with a degree in Biology Education. I am certified in Biology and Middle School Science. The purpose of my teaching is to allow every student to succeed. I will try any way possible to reach this goal for every child. Each student has their own way of learning best and I try to find that learning style and use it whenever possible.

More About This Tutor...

I have been selected as a peer tutor through Carlow University for Biology, Chemistry and Mathematics.
I prefer to begin by having the student describe the current subject matter to the best of his/her abilities to determine a starting point. I have found that having the student talk through the subject matter can be useful in determining his/her strengths and level of understanding. I like to have the student work through some problems they have not been assigned from their book/notes so that they are able to practice and work through some other problems before attempting any assignments. I have also found that it is useful to go over any previous quizzes or tests related to the current subject matter as difficulties are sometimes related to previous work because with these subjects the work tends to build upon itself.

More About This Tutor...

I my experience in learning and teaching anatomy, which revolves around learning concepts as well as brute memorization, each student, has learned in his or her own unique way. Because of this I feel it is hard to describe my "teaching style." One aspect of teaching that I feel I am very successful in understands each students learning style and being able to adapt to it. I consider myself a very patient and understanding person and never feel that I place "pressure" on students. I personally believe that a person learns better if they are in a comfortable situation.
I began my teaching experience at Ohio University where I was offered a position as an anatomy TA due to my success in the course. During this time I was required to make sure that 30+ students had a clear understanding of both lecture material and the lab material which included complete cat dissection. After I r ... read more

I always believe that the student can learn just as much from, or even more from, each other. Not just from the teacher alone. Allowing students to share their own personal experiences, knowledge, interest, goals, and opinions in the classroom in a wonderful way for students to learn and grow, as well as for me. I have already experienced this from my field studies, student teaching, tutoring, instructional assisting, and volunteer work. I will strive to make my classroom fun, yet structured. I will exemplify my enthusiasm and love for teaching and learning with all subjects and activities.

A Little Bit About Me...

I usually follow the curriculum assigned. But I employ the socratic method as well as questioning each fact I teach. I also tie in clinical correlations to make it more interesting. I have found my students repond well to me and like me as a professor and I spend some time tutoring my students at CCAC (Community Colleghe of Allegheny County).
I have always been raised as a stellar student. The focus on education in my parents home was considered the only choice. I graduated top 10% of my high school class and went onto medical school overseas as I had moved back to Pakistan my native country. I than returned to the USA and passed the hardest test on the planet which is the ECFMG equivalency exams for doctors. I went into medical research after that and than teaching. The most challenging aspect of teaching comes from the many different styles in which students acquire information. While some students benefit more from a hands-on approach, others are better served by visualizations/illustrations, while still others learn best by repetition of material. I have always approached students with an open mind, allowing them to help me understand what it is they need to learn materials in an efficient manner. As such, as an instructor, I try to incorporate many different approaches to the materials, in the hope that I will reach as many students as possible. While my teaching experience in the classroom has been limited, I look forward to continuing to teach/tutor to increase my understanding of the many ways that people learn, which provides me with new challenges to overcome.

A Little Bit About Me...

I have experience teaching many types of students. I worked one-on-one, daily, with an autistic student during my last position, so I understand that not every student learns in the same way. I think it works well to give shorter lessons to a small group, and then work individually with the students. I like to encourage them to help one another if they feel confident in the subject. I pay great attention to verifying that each student is following the lesson. My main teaching style is "I do, you do," meaning I show them how to do a problem, or spell a word, and then they show me how. I like to work with the parent and child on any goals they have for the year, while updating the parent and child on progress, problems, and behavior.

A Little Bit About Me...

As a first generation college student, I appreciated when teachers made me feel special, and I try to do the same. I was a Resident Assistant and Wellness Coordinator for a dormitory at WVU for three years, where I received a Resident Assistant of the Year Award. I currently teach four sections of general biology lab and two sections of comparative anatomy lab. I was awarded the 2010 Graduate Teaching Assistant of the Year award for the Department of Biology with a 93% evaluation rate. I held extra tutoring sessions in my free time.I adored getting to know them better, giving them more one on one teaching, and building a trusting relationship with over 200 students each semester.
