I have been working with children since high school. Currently I substitute teach through the Capital Region BOCES system in grades kindergarten through twelfth grade. I enjoy working with all age groups. For two summers I have worked at a discovery camp for students in grades kindergarten through second grade as the science teacher. This allowed me the opportunity to come up with creative activities and science experiments for the students to take part in. I have always wanted to be a teacher, specifically to teach reading. I have tutored throughout high school, participated in the tutor reading program through Big Brothers Big Sisters in Schenectady, and I am just completing my first early literacy class at Saint Rose. I am almost halfway through my Masters in the art of teaching program and should be student teaching within the next year. While I was an undergraduate, volunteering was very important to me. One of the places I volunteered was an after school program for children who live in Hamilton Hill. While I volunteered there I helped many of them with there homework as well as extra reading and writing to help improve those skills. I found that my psychology major as well as my education and english minors were very useful and helpful to help tutor in all subjects.
I love working with children. I was involved in girl scouts from first grade all the way to 12th grade and in those years I learned a lot of leadership skills. I am very patient and want to provide education to anyone that needs it. When I was in school I often struggled with school work, so I learned many different techniques to learn how to learn.

I find each experience in teaching to be different. The two girls that I tutored were both unique in personality and learning style. I find that identifying what needs the child has is the key to helping them learn. Also- figuring out what they like to learn and what they dislike is important. Although the ‘dislikes’ may be necessary, when they are identified, you can reward the student who completes them with an activity they enjoy. I understand that language does not come easily to everyone and that patience and perseverance pay off. Sometimes you have to explain it in many different ways until you find the angle that they understand. Later I traveled with first a classical choir and then a rock band, put my editing skills to work for a geopolitical organization and lectured on economics, dialectical materialism, spirituality, and more mundane topics, such as camping and travel.
