A Little Bit About Me...

I believe deeply in the power of education to change lives, which is why I have dedicated my life to this purpose. I spent 5 years as a teacher and coach in the country of Vietnam. During this time I taught English as a second language, coached soccer and chess, and launched a sports training business during which time I trained all staff on work processes and procedures. I have returned to the United States to complete a secondary teaching certificate in the subject areas of Business, Marketing, and History as well as a master's degree in education with an emphasis on Career and Technical Education). I completed those degrees in December, 2013. While I enjoy interacting with an entire classroom I am particularly drawn to one-on-one instruction because I feel this is where I can have the deepest impact. I feel that the connection between the teacher and pupil and the level of trust ... read more

I have an unparalleled amount of patience.

My first teaching experience was in high school teaching at after school programs about basic economic principles that may apply to kids. That was my first time understanding that I have potential to assist others in grasping topics. In my college career, I found myself teaching people everything from music to proper uses of tense/grammar. It was there that i learned that you really only learn a small fraction of what you need to help you in life in the classroom. The rest must be learned on your own or with some one-on-one counseling. I know that any information can possibly be simplified and made clearer with a little time and attention to towards looking at the bigger picture or basic concept.
The roles of the teacher and student are one in the same. I go into teaching knowing that I am not the end all shepherd of information but I am going to give all I can at being as clear, c ... read more

As a Controller, analyst and consultant of Computerized Accounting systems for small and medium sized businesses, I have 25 years plus, of extensive experience training and teaching both accounting and non-accounting executives how to data entry in 'subsidiary journals' like Accounts Receivable, Payable, Payroll, Fixed Assets and how to reconcile to 'control accounts' in General Ledger. My approach to tutoring would be to explain the mechanics of recording business transactions (two sides to a transactions, thus "double entry") rather than rote learning. This would benefit them to pass exams as well as in business if they chose to pursue a career in business and finance.
The most enjoyable and satisfying part of installing new Accounting systems in businesses was the opportunity to teach the accounting staff how to generate timely and accurate financial statements. Internal controls ... read more

A Little Bit About Me...

My approach is to incorporate multiple learning styles (visual, auditory and so on). I also like to incorporate skills training as part of a scenario when possible. Using techniques like appropriate background music, brief stretch breaks, having the children read to Sierra, my golden retriever, are all techniques that I would like to use. Teaching children would be a joy and very rewarding. I had trouble learning to read when I was young until I attended Mrs. Bird's class. She took the time to meet with me one-on-one and taught me to read and changed my life in the process. Seeing adult learners’ eyes light up when they "get it" have been some of the best times in my career. I would love to see that light in a child's eyes too.
My master's thesis was on computer-based training. My experience includes teaching end users and other trainers (train the trainer). Classroom train ... read more

More About This Tutor...

My last class was a self-contained 6th grade, with a 34% ELL and 14% special education population. My class average reading level rose from 4.6 to 7.1. Of all the students in the school who surpassed the required State testing and higher District goals in both reading and math, 75% came from my class, as did the winners of the school's essay contest, spelling bee and geography competition. My first career was in medicine where I gave direct care, taught military/civilian classes and participated extensively in research, gaining a deep understanding of science biology and chemistry and human A&P.
I integrate as many subjects as possible and seek to provide the missing schema, background experience and knowledge, that is critical to learning to a true state of understanding and mastery. Every subject is interesting to a child who can understand it and apply it. Through a ... read more

More About This Tutor...

I have worked with students of all ages in a variety of scenarios, but my most recent experience is teaching as an adjunct professor at Eastern Washington University. My course was "History 110: The American Experience." I had 52 students and we met Monday through Friday. I received excellent reviews and several of my students wrote to me or came to my office to tell me that I helped make history interesting for the first time. I have a passion for education and I take that passion into working with students. My degrees in history and theology, combined with my professional experience, have allowed me to learn how to research well, write properly, and present information in a stimulating way.
I am the son of two teachers. I was raised around teaching and it is simply in my blood. I love the teaching in the classroom, I love teaching individual students, I love teaching. Not only do ... read more
