Chess for fun and chess for blood

As a chess player for over 40 years I understand the importance of connecting with each person on an individual level to compliment the personality as it is expressed on the chess board.
I have tutored children and adults for 20 years in the Denver area. At the scholastic level my students improved by a minimum of one full class ranking(average 200 elo rating points). Adult students who wish to enter tournaments will receive training based on an emphasis in tactics and combinational play. This is the heart of chess. An addition of psychological preparation for the tournament will improve results as the normal pressures of competition can ruin many players form.

Math, Science & Microsoft Excel tutor

I have two technical-college degrees, I worked my way through both of them being a math tutor, and have used math and science in some way in every job I've ever held. As for my "teaching style", as everyone knows, it helps enormously just to have another person to work with, ask questions of, and generally talk things through. And since Im not a professional teacher, Im mostly a working tech--maybe I can help you see the connections between the abstract science & math the way its taught in school, and how that knowledge actually applies in the workplace (and in life.)

I have worked in both industry and government working on a worldwide basis with people of varying cultural backgrounds. I have traveled extensively in my profession. Over the last several years I have been involved with several business and working extensively with the Native American pueblo communities. In terms of tutoring, teaching, or mentoring I have worked with children of all ages in reading and math tutoring principally as a volunteer. I believe that children learn best when the material is most tangible to them. When teaching or tutoring, I make a huge effort to incorporate the students' names into math problems. I make it my goal to find out as much as I can about the students, and then put them in those environments in an imaginative way in some sort of math problem. I am extremely patient with my students, and appreciate gaining knowledge from their statements and insights. When appropriate, manipulatives are wonderful tools as well. Hands-on learners sometimes need to have creative input and control over the situation, and manipulatives allow the student and me to model the problem in a whole new way.
