Every student has a unique skill level and learning style, and I believe tutoring is an opportunity for me to help that student learn in his or her own unique way. I believe an engaged student will get the most out of tutoring, so I like to ask questions to check for understanding and I try to make the subject more interesting by highlighting the significance of what he or she is studying. My teaching style varies depending on the student. Perhaps my biggest asset is empathy as I can easily tell when a student (or group) gets it. Thus, I do not waste time telling students what they already know, and I can back up and explain in more detail when necessary. I have a kind of fluency in math, science, and language such that I pride myself on being able to explain any topic to any person. I have taught Medical Neuroanatomy to medical students at the University of Iowa Medical School. Students were directed in dissecting and identifying parts of the human brain. This occurred in small groups of five or six students. I also taught Molecular Neurobiology at Friday Harbor Laboratories to graduate students who came from around the world to take the course. Everyone has style of teaching that is unique. Mine is at first appearance very laid back, but on closer inspection is very powerful and extremely effective in the long run. My strategy as a teacher is to study and assess a student first, then to develop a plan with the student regarding how we should approach a task or problem. I am big on having students develop a stronger internal locus of control, empowering them to feel capable to tackle anything that they might encounter with or without the help of others. I enjoy the discovery style of teaching through labs and scientific literature instead of the customary lecture/reading/assessment programs. I also like to provide many different ways for students to be successful. I have a degree in Biology Education/Science Education from Central Washington University and did hold a Washington State teaching certificate in Biology and General Science until I moved down to California in 2000. My certificate enabled me to teach any secondary school science class. In addition to Biology I have extensive coursework in Physics and Chemistry as well as classes in Astronomy, Geology, Paleontology and other scientific pursuits.
