Before having children I worked as an teacher's aide at the local pre-school, working with 3-5 year-olds. After that I became a teacher's aid for the local middle school, working with children that were not allowed to go to regular classes due to their behavior. My main job was to show them how to write essays, reports, papers, etc. I also worked with their families as well and I loved it. Upon graduation, I worked for the Institute of Reading Development where I worked with students (ages ranging from 4-years to adult) to help improve comprehension, absorption, and phonetic awareness. I am a strong believer in the fact that all students learn in different ways and at their own pace. I am very empathetic and patient with my students. Once I am assigned a child I initally spend time going over a typical homework assignment to see where they are having some trouble. I get them to read out loud to me to see what their level of reading is. Some kids have problems sounding out the words or with simple rules of grammar. Once I see where they are at then I start bringing in some workbooks to help them in that particular area and apply that to their homework.
